Smoke - bump start vs starter ???
Smoke - bump start vs starter ???
Every time I start my truck the way normal people do there is a significant puff of rich soot. I have gotten some pretty nasty looks and comments. I don't mind it when I do stuff like this deliberately but I'd like to have a choice
,
My pad behind the garage is just long enough to bump start the truck. When I do this there is NO soot. Maybe someone could explain why and perhaps there might be a fix for the soot on a normal start?

When my starter went out and I had to bump start for a couple days, mine always smoked. I always used 3rd gear.
The reason they smoke is that there is a spring (called the starting spring) in the pump that forces the control collar to full fuel below 400 RPM. What gear are you bump starting in?

I see what you mean though about the gear, perhaps my reverse gear starts bring the rpm's up so fast that no smoke is generated.
