Bump start my diesel?

I was wondering since i have the manual, can you bump start a diesel? i think i remember my frind did it in an early 90's ford diesel. How about modern ones? any negative effects this may have? if one can has anyone done it?

I have done it many times. Usually in about fourth, key on, ease out the clutch, away you go!

seen it done on tractors. altho thats usually rough on the tow vehicle since the tractor would bring everything to a abrudt stop.

All you need is something to get the engine turning shouldn't matter if that comes from the flywheel via the starter or the transmission or a quick jerk on the fan belt.

Pull starting a tractor is a FUN experiance especaly when the person in the tractor puts it in a low gear. As far as giving the fan belt a yank on out trucks I would like to see that. I know that was just an example but made me laugh when I read it picturing someone pulling on hte belt trying to turn over there engine.

It would be better to use the starter cord from a lawnmower.
