shut down solenoid/ Horsepower

LOL, same here. Knock on wood, I have only had one solenoid fail in 5 years of a well tuned VE + other mods. The one that failed had small cracks in the rubber tip and at times would not seat into the bore and shut the fuel off which made the truck keep running.

I've got a regular choke cable I am going to hook up for insurance in case the solenoid fails unless mine isn't turned up far enough yet.

Well stretching the spring alone does not correct the problem.

I'll try the tip radiusing thing on the next.

OK now Im going to really mess with your heads. I removed the plungers and springs from both of my trucks. I think the solenoids actually restrict power.
My first truck I have worked on for 3 years, well when I changed the first solenoid I felt an increase in power. Now I only put the solenoid in to stop fuel leaks, no plunger or spring I will shut them down manualy.
I would like to see a dyno with a hot first gen with solenoid, then without.
I think the shutdown solenoids on first gens actually restrict fuel flow.
Im done with the VE soleniods. Im shuting down in other ways and dont want the spring and plunger in any of my first gens

I won't argue with you on that. From the cutaway drawings I've seen it looks like the plunger sticks out into the fuel passage pretty far - that's what gave me the idea of trying to streamline it some. I'll see how busy the dyno is at Spring Fling, maybe I can test your theory there.

I am not having this problem. But was bored and needed somthing to occupy my mind.

Howsabout something like this?

Don't know if the 6lbs of pull force would be enough. Might need to use a spring to assist it?

So you could hook that solinoid op to the manual shut down lever and wire it to a timer so when you sut off the key it has power for a few seconds..
I like this Idea. Do any of you have the problem when you turn off your key the engine goes down to a really low Idle but dose not shut off, of when yoy solinoids loose there tip is there no change in Idle when you turn off the key?

Well I dont have a Hot First Gen , but I will see if I can fit this in when I get back on the dyno. I still have a couple of things to do before I get on the rollers, but it shouldnt be too long. I wish I would have thought of this when my pump guy built this new pump it would have been real easy to do on the bench. I will call my pump guy and see when he is building another pump and see if he can check it out for us.

Something along this line would work but, It will need more stroke length and more pulling force. I'll see if I can find my fish scale to measure force.

Old Smoky used a shutdown solenoid off a 2nd gen 12 valve on his. A little wiring (need a relay) and a custom bracket and you're in business.

Problem with that is the 2nd gen solenoid's aren't too cheap

I'm wondering to Dave, how is yours holding up with the shaved plunger. Also how far is to far to turn up the pump. I have mine turned all the way in right now.
