Should POD's cause heat?

I suspect my horsepower is fairly low for my level of mods. I get max of 27 psi.

You can see my mods in my signature. The other day I really beat on the truck and the EGTs would not climb over 1100 no matter what. Does that mean I have plenty more to play with in my pump adjustments? All of you guys with PODs, how hot does your truck get (EGT)?

Good Morning, I have been looking for a set of new or used POD's but don't want to pay full price. Check my sig. I hit 1300 with stock injectors and a Hybrid turbo. POD,s should put in a lot more heat. I noticed you wrote "tweaked" pump. Have you ground or replaced the fuel pin? If you haven't, there is a lot of horsepower and heat from that mod available.

Sounds like your pump settings are pretty mild.

I did the PODs and pump rebuild at the same time. I had the pump shop set the pump "up" when they built it.

I just keep seeing guys doing upgraded turbos and such, but on my truck, there is no need for any of that. I can't get it too hot with my stock turbo. That's what is making me wonder if my pump is set pretty mild. I want some significant horsepower from this truck. I don't mind doing a turbo upgrade either if I need to.

I used to be able to bury the pyrometer with a stock H1C, of course I was out of the compressor efficiency range too (38psi), the hybrid does much better now.
I noticed when I was towing with the H1C on that if I brought the boost up above 25-28psi that the EGT's would climb rapidly. But at 25-28psi I could maintain 1000-1100*F pre turbo. If I brought the boost up higher it would go into meltdown mode.

Boatnik,
Unfortunately not all VE's were created equally. I recently turned mine up some more, 3/4 of turn is all I got before it hit the stop on the screw(internal stop, not the lock collar). Some pumps would run away if you did that, mine won't even show signs of it.

KAyers,
Check your pyrometer, make sure its reading correctly, I recently checked mine against another one because I too thought that my EGT's should be higher.

Still getting full travel with the throttle cable? No air leaks? Sometimes you can miss the little things looking for the bigger problem.

Low EGTs arent a bad thing, guys. I can hit 1300 easily in 3rd or 4th, but I also have injectors and a hotter pump than some, and have been looking for ways to lower it (besides removing the 1500# bed on the back). check with a known good pyrometer and see if there is any change.

I agree, mine is the same way. I removed the stop collar long ago and slowly over the course of weeks finally got the nerve to see what it had. It hit bottom and never showed any sign of running away and that is where it is today.

My pyrometer is an ISSPRO. It is about 2 months old and installed pre-turbo. I guess my pump is just adjusted pretty mildly. I asked the pump shop to turn it up some when they rebuilt it, but I'm sure they were pretty conservative in their settings.

I guess I'll start turning the fuel screw a little and see what happens.

I'd start with the AFC assembly first. I have had the pin rotation (from lean to rich) make a 5psi difference, and about 300rpm difference in when it came on. Most shops set them up conservatively, because like the getrag it is coupled with, the VE has gained a bad reputation when turned up much over stock. I got a jaw dropping look from a shop when I told him I wanted 100mm/stroke for my 90 pump. The one in my 92 flows about 160. as long as you keep your fuel pressure up, you should be ok. I can suck mine down to 0 with the stock lift pump, so I dont get on it hard.

I just picked up the rest of the parts to do my piston lift pump install yesterday, coincidentally. I'll get it put on soon.

By the way, you'd be hard pressed to do a piston lift pump swap for under $200 anymore. Plan on closer to $230 dollars for everything.

All the more reason to install a Walbro instead.
