Shifter handle questions.

My shifter handle has been going south for a while now, and the threads are all screwed up, up inside the handle itself, I have worn out my options with my current handle and there is about one thread left that bites and J.B. weld is holding the rest. Laugh if you want but this fix has lasted me two years so far and is now on it's last leg. So far I have tried re-threading the current handle, just welding it solid and nothing works as well as the J.B.. I can't seem to find any used shifters, mainly because nobody wants to serperate them from the trannies, and if I do find one for sale it cost way more than I think it's worth. I haven't found anything aftermarket either. I know it is about to give out on me since it has happend a few times before just by how it feels and I already have my trusty pipe in the passenger seat, it only took one time to break of pulling out and shifting from 1-2 and getting to neutral and the handle come off in my hand, then having to get out and go to my toolbox to get my pipe in the middle of an intersection!
Anyway, the options I can think of are, get a couple of small clamps (exhaust style I guess) and clamp the shifter along side of the stub comming from the tranny. Don't know how that will hold, any ideas or experience is appriciated. And my second option would be to make shifter with some pipe and a weld a nut to it to thread down to the stub. I don't know the thread size though, if somebody knows that please let me know, becasue I know if I take mine off to find out it will not thread back on, then I will be S.O.L. till I get the new one made.

Thanks
Chris

Mine has the bolts that go thru the shift lever. Is there anyway to drill thru the shift tube and the stub sticking up? If so drill a couple of holes thru it and try that. Good luck with it.

That would be great if I had one that had the bolts instead of threading, I didn't even know they had shifters that attatched different. My buddy has a 92' and his shifter is defferent than mine never looked under the boot but I bet his has the bolts. As far as bolting mine, I thought of that but I don't know if that would work or not, because the bolts would have to be pretty small to go throught the stub I would imagine, which is what led me to the clamp idea.

Ha ha just keep using the JB weld! that stuff is amazing! My buddy has a piece of a deer horn with a hole drilled in it turned sideways on his shifter, so it's kinda like the B&M handles, that you can put your hand around. its pretty sweet. I think his has JB weld on it too.

I'll help you out in a few days on this,

Down at the stub the factory shifter on a 92 mushroomed out from being loose, and now the bottom of the shifter is all broke and it's unusuable.. picture the metal bending away like a mushroom. thats what this is was.

my dad make a shifter for it at work, he took a peice of pipe that fits over the stub like perfect, drilled two small holes and put some very fine set screws on both sides of the pipe, so when you slide the shifter lever base over the stub the screws can lock it in,

then theres a smaller peice of pipe welded into the back of the peice of pipe with the set screws, the hole/tunnel in the top peice of pipe is 1/2 and fits the shifter stick perfectly (1/2 solid rod), just gotta weld it and then thread the end of the stick for a ****.

Crossy's Son,
What size pipe is that, that fit's snuggly over the stub?, and do you happen to know the thread size of the stub?

Thanks for the info and pics.

so are you saying the shifter **** comes off? or the entire shifter comes off and all you have is the 3" stub sticking out of the tranny?

Some numb-brain mig welded my stick to the stub in my 92 W350 before I got it.

As a general rule, the 89-92s had the straight stick that threaded onto the stub, and forced a reach to the passenger side to go into 5th. The 93s got the stick that has 2 ~3/8 bolts on the lower end of the stick that bolt onto the stub.

My 92 has this style, probably depends on the build date.

and the 93's have the factory bend in the stick to make it nicer.

1bad93's 93 w250 has the old style with the thread on stick, not bolts

In mycase, it isn't a straight shifter anymore, somebody bent it, but since the rubber inside the shifter is all screwed up it rotates very slowly as you use it, as in a rotation every couple of months, which intern means for a few days first gear is up under the sterring wheel, then for another few days it feels like I am going to hit the glovebox!
