Removing Fan for Winter
Removing Fan for Winter
What do you guys think about removing the engine fan during the winter? I've never done it. I have a good cooling system, albeit with the smaller radiator. T-stat runs at 170* during the summer. This time of year and lately I don't take road trips on weekends. During the week, my drive to work is a short 8 minute drive in the city, stoplights 35mph max. Forget about any good heat to and from. Although with the newer heater core it makes decent heat at 130*, which is the top I see to and from.
With no fan would I see quicker warm up? How much of risk would it be on a warm winter day of say 50*? Or 70 mile road trip during say 25* temps?

It'll be fine. I was running with my winter front closed off on the highway on a 60 degree day last week, the fan kicked on sitting at the traffic light at the bottom of the ramp and stayed on halfway up through 2nd gear. That was it. Temp gauge stayed in the normal range. The cooling systems are way bigger than they need to be for an unloaded truck.
Well I removed it this morning after work. Gotta love the Napa fan wrench and pulley holder. Removed it in about 30 secs. Took about another 60 secs to fish the fan out between the engine and fan shroud. Oh and that antiseize I coated on the threads and inside the 36mm nut about 3 years ago was still there, made removal a piece of cake. Gotta love antiseize, a little goes a long way. Will be interesting watching that temp gauge closely now.
I just got back from a 1300mi road trip to nevada, I was pulling 4000# trailer at 75mph and up the 6% grade coming out of salt lake with no fan in 40+degrees I was running 195 coolent temp, and 1200 on the pyro. You should be fine ,I have only ran my electric fan once in the last 3 months and that was sitting in trafic on a 75 degree day. other wise I never see over 190 on my 100 mi commute even when it is in the 60s. We will see how the electric fan keeps up when it is 100+ this next summer
