Reinstalling the IP, gear line up???
Reinstalling the IP, gear line up???
Ok, I am pulling the VE tomorrow to fix my leak. I have the bulletin from the recall, and a factory service manual. What I am not seeing, is how to properly time the pump. How do I line up the gears? I don't see where the TDC is on the motor. I am assuming that If I had the motor is at TDC, and I mark the location of the gears and I dont move the VE's shaft, I can put it back together with no problem. If I move something, how will I know how to get it back together correctly. Is there anything extra that I should take off to get a better look at things? This is the first time I will have touched the pump, and I am just trying to get as much info as I can before tearing into it for the first time.
Thanks again for all the help I get here.

Have you tried to set the motor to TDC by using the timing pin that's located below the injection pump and above the vac pump? You have to roll the motor and push in on the pin at the same time.
You can eliminate a lot of guess work by taking two metric bolts and screwing them in the pump gear,......
If you don't have metric bolts then you can use a few 1/4" course thread bolts that will start a thread or two in the gear. Make sure you don't tighten past finger tight!!!!
Anyhow, with out farting with the timing pin roll yer motor over and lay a straight edge on top of the bolts. When the edge get to about where it is in the pic and the KEYWAY IS DOWN then start trying to set the timing pin.
Personally I haven't reached around and farted with that pin in years when changing a pump.
A pic is worth 1000

If you are just pulling the pump to replace it and are not going to be doing any other work.. you don't need to time it.. it only goes in one way unless you pull the gear.. remove the nut.. and use a mirror to see the key way in the gear.. turn the key way up, so it will not fall out.. If you want it at TDC.. turn it so the key way is down...

So its not like a dizzy in a gasser that will go in more than one way?
I am not replacing the pump, I am going to try and fix a leak on it.
I really appreciate that pic. x2000
I read in the bulletin about putting the motot on a compression stroke to get the timing right. Does that need to be done? It sounded to me like puting a timing belt on a car. Do I need to set the tension?
I am going to start to pull the pump now. Before I get to the point that I will remove it, I will check back in here.
You guys are lifesavers!!!!!!!!
No tension to set. It's gear driven and the pump is keyed to the gear. It only goes in one way, period. Once the oil filler is removed from the timing cover, remove the nut and washer from the pump shaft. Put a rag in the hole in the timing cover to prevent the nut and washer from falling into the timing case. Once the nut is removed, shine a light in there and locate the key on the shaft...it's tricky to see and a small mirror can be a help. What you want to do is rotate the engine untill the keyway is at the 12o'clock position. Although this isn't entirely necessary, having the keyway point up minimizes the chances of it falling into the case. You can turn the engine over with the alternator nut...it'll slip the belt one way, but it works in the other direction. Depending on where the cam in the pump is, it may rotate a slight bit when it disengages the gear, but there's more than enough provided by the slots in the pump housing to wiggle things back in when the pump is re-sealed. Good luck--it's really not that bad

how much beer fits in that lil rice burner Greg?
I too have most of the front end off. Turns out I will be mounting my a/c condenser inside the cooler. I myself am about to dig into the pump and see what I cant tear up in it.

If it would warm up just a bit, I'd be out there working right now, but with 40 mph winds and no door on the tent, here I set
And my new head will be delivered tomorrow!!!
