Question Rear tires not turning in 4L

My dad was using my truck tonight hauling some cattle. He said he was backing the trailer up to the barn, when he got stuck. My cuosin who was helping him out said the rear tires weren't turning? Once he put it in 4H they were turning. What is in the TC that locks the front an rear together? I have never had a NP205 apart so I really don't know. It doesn;t make any funny sounds so I think the TC is ok, just something isn't quite right. BTW I do have another 205 in a 80' 3/4 gasser, what is the same and what would need to be swapped around to make it work?

Sounds like a linkage issue when going into 4L.

Kick it harder The linkage is worn out/dirty and they are nitorious for not engaging 4 low. The shift rails can control the front and rear outputs independently if set up correctly. What is happening is the one closer to the center of the truck is not going all the way in for whatever reason.

what he said ..the linkage is not moving the shifter fork all the way and just engaging the front .I have a cb mount on the floor and it will stop mine from engaging and will do the no rear thing I just need to give it a little harder push

I think that might be the ticket. I thought at some point I had it in 4L, but couldn't remember. I am sure the linkage just needs to be pulled off and cleaned up. My old 79 did the same thing, just had to use your foot a couple of times to get it into gear. Thanks for the help,

When was the last time you checked the fluid in the transfer case? Any leaks? I had the same problem when i bought the truck then it got worse and i lost 4H. I thought i was going to need a new transfer case but turns out it was just really low on fluid. Changed the fluid and everything worked. Just a thought.

I never have, I have only owned the truck for about 5K miles. I will have to do some checking now that it is nice out though.
