Rear end whine
Rear end whine
Ole' Yeller (89) has a 3.07 rear end that has a low whine above 45 mph. My
'91 has a 3.54, and no whine... The whine in the 3.07 is not REAL loud but I can hear it.... I have to open the sliding back glass to hear the 3.54.... Is this normal... the whine in the 3.07??

Does it whine with tire speed or drive shaft speed. Carrier bearings or pinion bearings. Gear whine is deeper__________________
Huh?? I don't understand.... it whines when I am driving along at 60 mph... if I let off the gas (fuel), it is very quite...

Carrier bearings have a kind of growl to them when starting out if the are really bad and it starts with tire speed. Similar kind of sound as knobby tires. Pin bearings are more like a turbo spool up as they spin faster than the rest.
It does sound like the diff needs some work.
Remove the cover and see if the carrier can be pried side to side. If not then its probably the pinion bearings. Check for sparkly fluid. Some fine metal paste on the plug is normal but a big growth of metal mold means bearing problems. Check the plug first
Good luck.

Thanks... It is definately a whine, not a growl of any sort.... I'm thinking the best way to attack this thing is bring the whole rearend out from under there and get it on a bench... do the pinion and the carriers and be done with it... what say ye'??
As a side note to this, my '91 had a leaking pinion seal. I replaced the seal and torqued the pinion nut to the prescribed ft-lb's, and the in-lb spec was just right as well... That rearend had a slight whine that I could only here with the sliding back glass open... after the seal replacement and the re-torqueing, that slight whine went away completely... It has got me wondering if this whine could be caused by a "loose" pinion that re-shimming would fix... It might be cost effective to check that pinion play first...

Most of the time a whine under load is pinion bearings.
I would open it and replace the pinion and carrier bearings. Reset as needed and don't worry about it for another 200K or so.
Replace the pinion nut when you do it.
