Rear end whine
Over the last 8 or 10,000 miles I have developed a whine in my rear end. There is a bit of slack in it. There is a slight leak, just a seep really, at the pinion seal. I just changed the oil, other than the normal flakes, it is making no metal, took a sample later and the metal was considered moderate. All the teeth look good, they will cut you if don't watch it, but I didn't see any pieces broken out, and like I said, no chunks in the pumpkin. I have enough movement that I think it is causing the anti-lock brake speed sensor to kick off every now and then. I haven't worried about it to much because it isn't really getting hot. The hottest I've seen it was 192 and I check it quite a bit and that really isn't hot while towing heavy. I think I'm probably looking at a ring and pinion job sometime in the future. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

If the surfaces of the gears are smearing enough to cause the edges to stick out to cut you, then you have worn through the hardened layer on the surface of the gear teeth. The wear rate now will increase and the clearances are going to increase in a faster rate than before no matter the lube you put in.
