pump tweeks while installing 3200 rpm spring
pump tweeks while installing 3200 rpm spring
I just recieved a 3200 rpm spring from PDR. The next warm day, I am going to attempt to install it in my pump, but I have some questions.
1. Do I need any gaskets or o-rings to re-seal my pump when I am putting it back together?
2. Am I going to need any special tools to do the job?
2. Should I grind the "foot" off while I am in there. I have read that mod works very good, but I don't want my EGTs to get out of control. My truck is totaly stock, the 3200 spring is my first BOMB.
3. Is there anything else I should do while I have the pump apart?
Thanks in advance
All of you are a wealth of info

There is an oring on the top cover and I have not had to place one yet.
The cover is held on with allen bolts. It takes a 5MM allen wrench.
If it were mine I would grind the foot while you were there. Make sure you have a pyrometer if you do that mod. While you pull the cover, its easiest to remove the cover when you pull the fuel screw all the way out. When the screw is out there is a little collar crimped onto the threads to keep one from screwing the fuel screw in too far. I would go ahead and remove that crimp collar.
Have fun

I really want to grind the foot, but I don't want to until I put my stack up. I am fogging bad enough as it is. I feel bad for the poor suckers behind me when I get on it, and I can't stop getting on it!
Hey Mark,
Since you're just getting started on the tweaking road to HP, try to do as few things at any one time as you can get away with.
If you get gauges in they will tell you what the effects of your mods have been and also help keep you out of the repair bay....
Also, get a new o-ring for the throttle shaft. It will help reduce the likelyhood of your throttle shaft sweating or leaking fuel from being disturbed during removal.....
The Bosch part number for the o-ring is: 1-460-210-008 ~ O-Ring.
There is also a shim in the parts listing, the number is: 1-200-101-640~shim.
These parts/numbers are for a Bosch VE distributor type inj. pump labelled:
0-460-426-205 distributor style injection pump.
That should keep you from any headaches once it's all back together and you get fuel pressure inside the pump case again.

I'm with the good pastor on this one..since your truck is stock and you're just getting going with the mods, start with one thing at a time. The spring is an awesome mod and makes the truck a lot more fun to drive without adding fuel. Once you've had the pump top off, it won't be nuttin to go back in there and grind the foot if you desire. The foot is also one of the few mods to the VE that cannont be undone, so you've gotta be pretty sure you want it before you hack away. I think other mods and tweeks will get your pyro into the danger zone with no trouble at all
I've done/been involved in several governor spring installs and none of the throttle shafts have leaked afterwards. I say just do it, then fix it later if it leaks.
I'm in with Greg and the Pastor on the AFC lever grind. It is a very radical mod, not to be done lightly. If you get bigger injectors in the future you will have to drive carefully unless you want everybody behind you to hate you.
Special-ish tools that are helpful: a small pair of long nose pliers (for the gov. spring), a ball end 5 mm hex key (do NOT try to break the bolts loose with it, this is only to take them out quickly once they are loose), a bent 10 mm box/combo wrench (for the idle locknut), a 13 mm "S" wrench (for the bottom pump nut), and having a third arm transplanted would be hepful too.

I didn't replace my "o" ring when I did my Gov Spring, but then the pump was brand new when I did it!
I feel guilty enough about the POD fogging I give people behind me now, so like I said I am waiting until I complete the stack before I mutilate the lever. I don't know what has happened to me! In the past I wouldn't have cared about the people behind me

Ok, I'm done hijaking this thread!

OK Cool...This info has been great. I will just do the 3200 spring mod at this time. After I get that all settled down, and am happy with the way the truck is running, I'll try turning up the fuel screw a little. Like the good pastor said...one thing at a time.
