Power Steering Pump

So about a month ago I replaced my old worn steering gear, both return and supply hoses and my power steering pump. After replacement my pump would not stop leaking through the high-pressure line. I replaced the seal a number of times. Now it seems I have fixed that leak but now the pump is leaking through the cap. When I shut the truck down there is a hissing noise coming out of the cap. I can remove the cap to release the pressure but this seems very odd. It almost seems the pump is making too much pressure or there is a clog somewhere in the system...

Any thoughts?

You probably have an air bubble in the system. leave the cap off and run it a while and try leaving the cap off over night. If you search, I believe that there is a thread about loosening the low pressure return line, to try to bleed the system...Mark

When I upgraded to the newer IC style vacuum/power steering pump, I thought I was loosing power steering fluid into the motor. I would top up the reservoir, drive for a day, then check, down again, top up and few days later was down. I did this several times and my level now stays the same. So guess it took a few days to work out all the air from the system.

I had the same thing, it was a ripped o-ring on the end of the low pressure (suck) side.

Replaced the o-ring, filled it up, left cap off right-left-right.

All set now.

I had the same thing, the high pressure line had little holes in it that you couldn't see until someone turned the wheels. i didn't figure this out until after i replaced the pump. So be sure to check for that.
