Power gain of HX35

What kind of power/torque gain would I see from upgrading to this turbo with a 16 cm housing. I have a 92 W250 5spd that is currently all stock with a 21 cm housing on now. The only upgrades are a big air filter and 5 inch stacks. I plan on upgrading to a 16 cm housing, old smokey fuel pin, 3200 spring and pump mods. The pump has never been touched. How much better are the HX35 turbos than what I have stock? I use the truck for pulling a 34 ft gooseneck with heavy loads of scrap metal so i'm looking for good power / torque. Right now she pulls it but takes long to spool up the turbo and pretty doggy. Last load on the scales was 28,000..including the truck. Thanks in advance. Matt

Also is the HX35 a bolt on or would I need to modify other things.

Well the 35 is supposed to be a bolt on. I hope so because I have one in the mail coming to me. I'm keeping my 16 cm hot side and putting the hx on. I would love to hear anymore input as it looks like we are shooting for the same setup.

when i bought my truck (91.5 Cummins IC) it came with what is in my Sig.
and it has the HX35 not sure of the but i think it has the 16cm housing also
I pulled a 24' enclosed trailer with 4 tool boxs full of tools and had not prob. climbing hills at 70 mph the only thing i have to watch are my tranny temps.
(will be putting on another cooler) however i want more power and will be going with a bigger turbo soon.. also have the bosch 185 injectors and dont have egt prob's... so to put in prospective just bought a 89 cummins n-ic with no mods and WOW what a dawg.. am really impressed with my 91.5 more than ever...
Hope this helps

I don't know how much of an actual gain there is but the truck becomes a heck of a lot more fun to drive and easier to drive in the city, especially with a 5-speed. The HX-35 is a direct bolt on, the stock down pipe won't seal totally since the HX-35 is a bit longer than the H1C. With Stan's 4" system and downpipe it seals perfectly. You could also modify the stock downpipe but it gives you a little reasoning to buy more goodies for your truck.

I went from 18-19 pounds of boost with the H1C, taking forever to get there to 25 pounds of boost and getting there in a fraction of the time. I cranked the fuel some more since then and I now peak at 30psi.

What he said. You need more fuel to make more power, but the small housing will get the power you have responding sooner.

Look at my sig. I've got a PDR HX35 cold side and a 14cm W/G hot side with a boost controller. In Meridian on 8/18/07 I ran 394/865 on #2 and 441/889 on W/M (50/50 mix). You will still need fuel and air to get good numbers.

Question So Much to Learn!

Could someone clairify "Won't seal completely" in terms of the stock down pipe mateing with the HX-35? I was thinking about this mod for my 92 to get rid of its "Lag master".

The rig is going to need a new exhaust after this coming winter. Would one of the 4" kits from source automotive mate up correctly?

Mike

It'll leak a tiny bit, enough to coat the v-band in a bit of soot, its nothing super serious but it can be a concern. I'm not totally sure about the exhaust system you mentioned but I do know from personal experience that Stan's full 4" system fits perfectly.

That's the first I've heard of the stock downpipe not mating well with the HX-35. I wouldn't let one case discourage you.

Exactly what i was thinking wanna!! move your downpipe back 1 1/4 in and you will have no problems.
I just put a hx on my 92' and let me tell u !!! WOW what a diff! i left the 12 cm w/g hot side on and its great with the 5 speed. You can grind your own fuel pin too and get the same as a ol smoky pin. That is one mod that doesen't get stressed enough of what a diff in power it makes! i did mine the other day and im pulling 32 psi of boost.
For pulling, the hx was factory from 95' to 02' on manual tranny trucks. the autos quit usei ng them in 2000 or 2001 i think. I sure like mine, next thing is a 3200 spring! good luck
