Check your thermostat. Does your temp gauge come up to normal? If your thermostat is stuck open it won't come up to proper operating temp and everything will suffer. $$$

It's at the front of the engine. It goes in sideways from the passenger side. Take off the hose and the fan belt I think has to come off since you have to drop the alternator down to get one of the bolts out. Be sure to get the thick rubber gasket when you get the thermostat.

The KSB solenoid is on the left side of the VE inj pump and is attached at an angle with a wire clipped on the back end and a metal tube on the front end. It is a slow acting wax pellet solenoid so simply disconnecting/connecting for a few minutes may not show any difference.

Yes, running cold will cause more smoke and sometimes missing. The KSB will advance the timing when it's cold and you should notice the engine "ping" is more pronounced when it's cold. It should go away when it warms up.

Does your temp gauge come up when it's warmed up? When I got my truck the thermostat had been gutted so it didn't warm up at all. It smoked more and ran crappy until I put a good thermostat in.

Hope this helps.

I think you confused the shutoff solenoid with the KSB. Shutdown is on top, if it doesn't have power the truck will not start. KSB is on the side, has a tube coming out one end of it. The truck may smoke when cold if it doesn't have power.

KSB threads-

KSB stands for "KaltStartBeschleuniger". If your German is not so good that basically means cold start advance.

That's weird. Unplugging the KSB shouldn't keep the truck from firing, even if it's really cold out.

Wouldn't crank or wouldn't fire?

Get a test light and see if you're getting power to the starter solenoid when you hit the key. If you have power there, most likely it's the contacts in the solenoid - they are the most common cause of starting troubles after corroded battery connections.
