Plasti Dipped Wheels
Plasti Dipped Wheels
Ok, so I have been wanting to have my wheels powder coated black for some time now. I found on line where people have been using this Plasti Dip on wheels and even covering entire cars. Stuff is supposed to be easily removable and not damage the chrome or paint you put it on. At a little under $6.00 a can I figured I would try it out and make sure I am going to like the wheels black. My wheels were already very rusted and pitted for years of neglect on my part as I don't like chrome.
As you can see my wheels were in bad need of some TLC!

I removed the wheel and tire from the truck and cleaned the wheel with soap and water. I then used Naval Jelly and my wifes tooth brush to remove all the rust.

Make sure the wheel is clean as possible. I used a chrome cleaner to remove all the left over cloudy looking spots. Then cleaned the entire wheel with mineral spirits.

After that I taped off around the wheel making sure to get the tape as far down between the wheel and the tire. I made sure the tape was stuck to the tire and not the wheel. I will explain why later.

I started with a very light coat all the way around the wheel. As seen the picture above.
After allowing the product to get mostly dry I added the next coat and so on until I had applied 5-6 coats. After reading multiple threads on other forums and watching youtube videos it seems most people had problems with how long the spray lasted. Most of the complaints seemed to be from not cleaning the wheel properly and not going all the way over the lip of the wheel.
When I sprayed mine I made sure to apply the product all the way around the lip of the wheel as far down as I could spray it. I used about 1 can a wheel and that included painting the center caps.

Once dried it still has a textured appearance and resembles bed liner with semi-flat black look.
I am still letting the last coat on the fronts dry. Will post final pictures of the truck in a bit. All in all it cost me about $25.00.
Lets see how long it holds up.

Everything I read on actually painting the chrome suggested sand the parts I and using etching primer. I did this because it was a cheap, reversible way to see if I like it. May actually try it on some of the other parts I have been thinking about painting black.
Thought it was a neat idea and comes in more than black. Supposedly won'thurt your clear coat too, so someone could use it to try out a new paint scheme.

Why beat the dang truck!!! It wasnt cheating on him! And it was his and she apparetly wasnt! Tell him dont worry 20yrs from now it will be surprising how little it mattered. But still good looking truck though. Good luck with the wheels. Definate improvment.
