P/S- Vacuum pumps
P/S- Vacuum pumps, smoke issue
I just bought a 91 D350 DRW, 727. 230k, box truck.
Will a P/S-Vacuum pump from a 91.5+ work on a non-inter cooled 91?
Or is there a upgraded pump combo that is more desirable then the OEM setup for that year.
Another question, Is there any way to run a bigger volume P/S pump so you could use it as a hydraulic PTO to run a dump bed?
If not how do you run a PTO hyd. pump on a D350 auto (727)?
Onto the smoke issue, I have little experience with this "little" engine in this light of a chassis. I only drove it once to get it home since no P/S or Vacuum assist. But after it was warmed up, I floored it from a stop to see what it had, well I buried 3-4 cars in the black/grey cloud behind me, lol, with unimpressive get up and go. I didn't hear any funny noises, trans shifted fine. So I took my foot out of it and the smoke cleared up just like expected. For the miles the engine, trans run very well, and under normal acceleration just a very slight haze from the tailpipe.
My question is that the huge cloud seemed excessive at WOT. Do you folks agree? I have no problem w/smoke if it were turned up but I believe it is not, due to it being a box truck used for a business, and lackluster performance. I do not know if there are any emissions that would prevent this (being a light duty chassis) or if it is a sign of poor injector condition, or imminent turbo rebuild time. I will grab the turbo wheel and give it a wiggle, and look for signs of oil leaking. Any thoughts on my concerns? Thanks Gregg

I dunno on the PS/Vac pump issue. You can get a PS pump off a heavier application that will fit where the vac/ps combo is now that would have the grunt to run a dump, but that leaves you with no vacuum for the brakes and HVAC system. Then you'd have to add an electric vac pump like street rods use to run the brakes and HVAC. Long story short, I think you'd be better off getting a belt driven hydraulic pump and fabbing up a bracket. Northern Tool and Equipment sells the pumps.
The smoke issue may be due to somebody playing with the smoke screw, this is a very easy adjustment to reach and is often "turned up" in the mistaken belief that it will add power. Also, these trucks seem to leave a nasty cloud when stomped on if they've been run gently for a while. All the carbon blows out and leaves a big ol' cloud.

Not really. If you pull the AFC cover (the part the smoke scre screws into) and measure how far the screw sticks out, set it around 1/8 inch and see how that works. If it's still too smoky, back off. If the truck is too doggy turn it in a little. This adjustment only affects the first few truck lengths.

Ref your Hydro pump, I looked into that last year. I was told by a few different sources not to be messing with the steering hydraulics. It would cause issues with the vacuum and braking. I looked for some sort of serpentine pully to mount on a hydro pump from tractor supply, but couldn't find anything without ordering one from a dealer and gambling on it fitting(they couldn't/wouldn't look into shaft sizes). I ended up picking up an elec/hydro lift bed pump, but am still leaning towards powering from the engine. I have contemplated stacking a couple pully's to fit the serpentine, and putting the pump where the AC would mount.
I have since gotten together with Chaikwa, who's been a big help on the issue. He has a pump mounted near the alternator, driven by a v-belt, off an extra pully mounted on the fan pully. He leaves the belt off until the pump is needed. An electric clutch is available too, so you can leave the belt on. Hope that helps, Don.

my dads 90 has been retrofitted with the vaccum pump like my 93 has, so it is possible. A local dodge garage did the conversion so I don't know the specifics.
He had to get the pump of course, a new adaptor for the ps pump, and the oil line for the vac pump for shure.
Much better assist on the brakes than the wore out "pods" the older trucks origionaly had.

Chrisreyn- The auto trans (727) in my truck does not have a PTO provision. My truck is also a 2wd , so no transfer case to bolt a PTO to.
Redleg- I will do a search for that username and see what I find. I have a ele/hydro dump bed on another truck and its just way too slow when loaded, and its forever having solenoid problems.
wannadiesel- I will look into your suggestions, thanks.
andy354- See if you can find out more info especially part# or at least model and year.
