Overdrive unit failure with pics

I've been helping a friend rebuild his 46RH, turns out his overdrive unit
failed, thought you folks might like to see some pics.

Failure went something like this...
-The roller bearing between the overdrive planetary and the O.D. spring support plate failed,
-rotating planetary jams against support plate and causes the plate to rotate, it's supposed to be stationary.
-rotating plate causes O.D. spring to spin in the hub
and the friction between the now rotating spring and non rotating hub causes alot of heat damage.

notice the score marks on the planetary.

notice the heat damage on the spring and the hub.

Off to the parts store....

Wow, another good reason to replace all of the Torrington bearings when doing an overhaul. That big spring has somewhere between 600 and 800 pounds of force on it.
Thanks for the pics.

That's not a 46RH it's either a 518 or a 47RH. I can see by the straight cut gears it's a diesel trans. The 46 was for gas engines only. If you try to get parts for a 46 you'll get the wrong stuff.

There is a new larger bearing and upgraded plate out for them. Check out PATC, just do a google search for them.

I was under the impression that the 4 speed diesel trans was called
an A518 / 46RH.
I've got good used parts to replace this with and a new bearing thrust plate from Sonnax.

The 518 came in different configurations depending on what engine it was behind. So they came out with the new designations to identify them better. The first digit is the number of forward speeds, the second is an arbitrary torque capacity. A 2 was the lighter 904 based trans, the 6 was for gas engines, the 7 for diesels and the V10 and the 8 is diesel only. The third digit is for it's drive configuration, with R being rear wheel drive and the last digit is whether it's hydraulically controlled or electronic.

The Factory Service Manual calls the transmission for the 1993 CTD a 46RH

It's also called A518

94 went to 47RH, also called A618

A lot of the internals are interchangeable. I would replace the retaining rings and bearings for sure. PATC http://transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm sells a lot of upgrade parts.
