Overdrive trans
Overdrive trans
I'm seriously considering a 1991 4x4 CTD with an OD trans. truck has 200k. Should i be avoiding this and look for something different. Everything seems to shift fine and the truck overall has been very well maintianed. I just don't want to have to rebuild this thing every 50k or something like that. I'm not planning on towing the queen mary but eventually will probally end up with a double axle trailer moving some cars(one at a time) around from time to time.
is it worth the price
well is it worth the price? do you like the truck. if so get it. as long as you take cear of it, it will last. you wont have to re-build it every 50K.
heck, what the askin price?

The truck is a 91 SRW regular cab 4x4. Its Intercooled and has a factory tach. Mileage is just under 200k. The paint is still blingin but it does have a little rust (about 6 inches long) on the botton of the doors and a quarter sized spot on the drivers fender. I checked the under side good and its very clean. It has an auto with OD that seemed to shift ok. It Comes with a 4 year old 8.5ft western unimount plow that has seen very little private use. Rearend was rebuilt 2 years ago with just about everything replaced. I had it up to 70mph and had almost no shakes or shimmys. the guy said a wheel wieght came off but he will fix that which too me made sense for the very small shake in the wheel at speed. The price is 6800 down from 7400 but i believe thats a little high. Hes going to think about a price without the plow since I don't totally need one but I wouldn't hurt. I figure the plow is worth about 1500(3500 new). and with the plow I would feel ok around 6000-6200 even though to everyone in the game already that would be high. I have seen worse trucks sell for more though. The truck has been on the market for 3 months and I'm the first guy to actually go look at it and drive it. All i have to say is everyone be ready because once I pick one up they will be falling from the sky for free. The only thing that has me worried is the trans since everyone seems to give the O/D trans a bad wrap. seems like either way standard or auto its the weakest link in these trucks
i think the later model trucks are the ones that have probs with the auto's. the biggest problem with the auto in first gens is the non lockup sloppy torque converter. apperently it only lets about %60 power to the rear wheels?
i wanted a manual, but i had enough trouble finding the truck i have as it is. when all is said and done, im happy with my auto. especially in socal traffic

My 92 had over 300,000 on it before I had to replace the trans. and I am real hard on the old girl.I tow moderate loads. I drag race. I smoke the tires every chance that I get. so I wouldnt worry about the transmission. and that sounds like a pretty good price to me.
I'm not sure on the price of a stock rebuild, but a trans. from one of the reputable builders will run you from 2800 to 3400 buck's. but that's a trans that you can pound on all day long without worrying.

Non lockup transmisions of this calibre are around $1600-2000. A little more if you want a long warranty. The lockup style are the ones that can't take power upgrades, the lockup clutch slips under the torque of the Cummins and fills the transmission with friction material from the lock up clutches. The non-lock up one like you have hold up rather well. They aren't the best at transfering all the power your Cummins makes to the ground though. Check out Jasperengines.com. Ken Irwin
