Auto trans overdrive (dumb question)

Ok. Ive never really been an auto trans person.
I dont trust them.

Im hopefuly going on a roadtrip tomorow and Ill be towing a jeep loaded with tools, a welder, valve grinder, ect., ect...and a fourwheeler in the bed. My question is, do I leave my overdrive on while towing or do I disengage it?
The reason Im asking is Ive been told that on old auto trans, if you pull with overdrive in place, you can burn it up and thats the last thing I need right now.
Any insight would be great.

Thanks

Uhm 5,000lbs at the most.
A 99 Jeep...that what? 2,500-3,000lbs(not sure...not a Jeep person)
A 4-wheeler 500lbs
A welder, bench grinder, valve grinder, maybe a 100gal air compressor tank, and a bunch of assorted tools. Its not a lot but it sure aint empty and its about an 8 hour dirve.

How doest that sound? O/D or NO O/D?

Any incline pop it out of OD. I run my truck with 2700 lbs of camper + towing my boat and have no prob on the flats in OD when it starts to get hilly I'll drop the OD and run her in 3rd.

get a tranny temp gauge if you can...I pop it out of OD for inclines (and even some flats...but hopefully my new cooler will fix that)

I towed 10K one year, kept it in OD most of the time. Only time I took it out was to tow up in the mountains, and some intown traffic. As long as you ahve the power to pull it, and keep the RPMs above about 2000, you should do fine with that relatively small a load.

I tow my CJ with my auto through the mountains in Colorado. Don't have a tranny temp gauge (now on the way), but when I'm pulling hard on the longer grades, I drop out of o/d, especially if the temps start to get up there.

My buddy just weighed his TJ at ~4,000. That's a bit more than I thought it should have weighed.
