After having enormous trouble installing the snap ring while holding the shifter and ring down against the spring in a G360 Getrag I dreamed up a helpful set of tools.
First I got an M8-1.25 x 25mm bolt and ground down the tip to fit in place of one of the guide pins for the shifter.
Then I made 2 pieces out of scraps I had laying around.
Be sure to grind a notch in the end of the 1 x 1" x 3-3/8" aluminum angle. The hole spacing in the other piece is 3-3/4"
The long flat piece attaches to the top of the tower by replacing one of the guide pins with the pin I made above. Attach the angle piece to the shift stub with Tie-Wraps. Then by using a long Phillips screwdriver to press the shifter down into the shift tower and hold it down while using the other hand to put in the C-ring. You should place the C-Ring in position before you start pressing down otherwise it's hard to get over the angle piece.
The pic is of my old shifter that a PO completely mangled trying to solve the shifter lockup problem these trans are prone to.
The last one I did required two people. One very strong person to force the shift stub down into the stub while I inserted the C-Ring. What a PITA.
Nice way to solve that puzzle. I like it!
I install them buy forcing the shifter stub into place than leaning on the shifter **** to keep it there with the center of my chest while fiddling with the snap ring. It is a lame job and makes your chest sore.
Yeah those suck. I also used to hold it in place with my chest while I fought with the ring. Looks like you lost some blood on the workbench while you were fighting with it.

Actually that's paint but I get your meaning. My scars have scars.
