Old Smokey Mount - TIGHTWAD alternative

I like the look of the Old Smokey mount. But I don't want to do major surgery every time I change the Air Filter. I am also a tightwad. So anyway, I decided to sell the Old Smokey mount that I bought and instead I did this:

First I removed the stock airbox. Then I bought a BHAF and Outerwears pre-filter. I made a strap that suspends the filter in the same place it was. Then I cut up an old Tupperware box and made a drip-cover that should keep any water from dripping down. I put pics in my gallery. I call it the Tightwad BHAF Cover. I know there are a few out there who will appreciate this:

ouchman, is that a bungee cord you have holding up the filter? Thats good, cause the filter screen will rub a hole in the prefilter from riding on the fenderwell. Another thing to look out for is the filter neck falling out of the intake hose. The filter end clamp on the hose is 5". The BHAF neck is 4" od. You can only tighten that clamp so far, it eventually rides or vibrates off. As did mine many times. A screw through the neck and hose securing them will end that.

Actually mine was just an RCH away from being tight so I wrapped a couple layers of metal-tape around it and it seems plenty tight. I took the hooks from a bungee and ran a piece of webbing strap between them to suspend the filter. It isn't springy like bungee, so it should stay in place. I saw right away that the pre-filter could easily be torn so I wanted to keep it from rubbing on anything too much.

My early '91 is, of course, not aftercooled. I converted the stock filter box into swiss cheese. In the warmer months I block it with duct tape so that only cool air enters the filter. I have noticed a real drop in performance when pulling a load at lower speeds when warmed air comes through the unrestricted holy airbox. Has anyone else noticed this? Would the gains in using a BHAF not be somewhat reduced by the fact that hot air from underhood is raising intake temps??

Not really sure - It does sit right on top of the air intake tube though.

I'm sure it would be greatly reduce by pulling hot air that has just gone through the radiator. See this thread for a better alternative:

I see by your sig you have intercooling and so the extra heat may not matter much. Anyone with a non-ic have thoughts along these lines?

It will make a difference in both IC and non-IC trucks because the compressor can move cool air better than hot air. Also the air going into the IC will be cooler to begin with and will cool even more.
