Oil in Coolant - help please!

Gents,

Just got a call from my father, he was driving the 91 in my signature and noticed the oil pressure gauge dropped suddenly. He pulled over and popped the hood and noticed oil/coolant in the overflow jug. Pulled dipstick and doesn't have anything on it. What could have happened? Oil cooler? Head gasket? He said it didnt make any strange noises.

Could be either, but most likely its the oil cooler. Pull it out and pressure test it.

Is this oil cooler failure common if so can it be caught before it goes out, also will the oil cooler from a 24 valve work in a 12 valve? Zack sorry to hijack ya so here's a bump for ya

No worries, I hope we can all learn a thing or two.

Found a machine shop on ebay that sells them for all B series 5.9's for 105.00 with gaskets.

You have to provide them w/ the engine S/N so they know which gaskets to send.

I dont think this is preventable. Its buried in the block and surely doesnt give off any warning signs.

Oil cooler failure is not super common but it happens. Poor cooling system maintenance is sometimes the culprit, but sometimes there seems to be no reason beyond "it started leaking."

My truck sat for years before i found it and bought it. I replaced hoses, belts, fluids, filters, radiator, thermostat.

Next time I will replace this as well....maybe.

In all honesty, dads prolly only put 100 miles on this truck since I bought it and got it going. Glad it went out close to home.

My donor truck I bought with a "bad head gasket", turned out to be the oil cooler.
