NV4500 conversion
I know this topic has been mentioned a ton of times. I want to swap my 727 auto to a nv4500. Its costly I know, but Ive got too much in my 91 to get rid of it. I just need to know the breakdown of everything I will need to get before swapping. I plan on doing the swap the first week im out of school and before i head to Colorado for a wedding. So Id like to get the parts together and ready to drop in so I can finish it in about a week or 2 span. Can someone help me out here or point me in the right direction? thanks.
In addition to the bellhousing you will need the ball stud and spring clip for the release fork as well as the fork. The starter will be the same in fact you dont even have to remove it for the job. Drive shaft will have to be retubed 6 inches longer than original. I did this conversion on a 4x4 and had very little difficulty.

1stgen, I think that i read a post of yours a while back, and you mentioned that Advance Adaptors sells a coupler and housing to mate the 29 spline NV to the 23 spline t-case. If I recall, it was very spendy. Is it worthwhile to go this route, or just to get a different transfer case? Also, is it very easy to modify the crossmember for the nv4500? I know someone with a 94 that he may sell cheap, so there is a possibility for a good donor. Is it very expensive to rebuild an NV4500?
I think the adapter is only recommended if you're at stock power and drive empty. The 29 spline shaft is a larger diameter. You can put the larger shaft in the 23 spline 205 case, but there is machining involved. You can also get a NV4500 w/ 23 spl. output, but again, only recommended for stock power/light loads.
Can you get a bigger input shaft for the NP205? Or is there something else different? WHy the heck couldnt DOdge have used the same splined t-case for ALL trannies?! That would have been just too simple.
The NV4500 is about the same to rebuild, and it isnt any better a transmission than the stock Getrag. For the NV4500, you have to buy liquid gold to fill it, and the updated mainshaft is spendy. But if you have your heart set on it, then by all means go for it.

Everything you need to update the NV is on either quad 4x4 or standard transmission and gear's site. There is a splined shaft that 5th gear goes on, and there is a larger input shaft, but I think thats only needed for high hp.

and ball stud and spring clip for the release fork as well as the fork are needed for the conversion as I understand, minus a transfer case for me. Can someone now tell me which parts are 91 truck specific and which are NV4500 specific? Thanks for all the help. randy
