New shocks?
New shocks?
Hello everyone. Just a quick question. I bought new pro comp shocks for my 1991 w250. Was gonna do a shackle drop to lift it about 4 inches. But Im considering otherwise now. If I put he we shocks in do you think it'll lift it at all? Maybe 2 inches?
Short answer is no.
My ProComp monotubes seemed to lift the truck slightly, but it was no more than half an inch. Monotubes (sometimes referred to as "gas shocks") are a superior technoloogy, especially for racing applications, but they have the downside of adding stiffness, something I did not want in my First Gen truck. All Bilsteins are monotubes; Koni and Kayaba ("KYB") manufacture both monotube and twin tube shocks. If I had it to do over I would avoid the expensive monotubes and go with adjustable Ranchos (which are twin tubes).
Anyway, most ProComps are twin tube. My guess is that includes the shocks you recently purchased. And a twin tube shock shouldn't lift your truck at all.

Shocks do not hold the truck up they only help control suspension oscillation(bouncing). Your truck will sit at exactly the same height with the shocks removed as it does with them. The exception being air and coilover shocks, both of which place a load on a part of the shock mounts that they were not engineered for.
That said if you are planning on lifting the truck 4 inches(springs or shackles do this) the stock length shocks will more than likely be to short.
