I have seen 2nd gen radiators made to fit, with the shroud and all.
You will be cutting, grinding, trimming and welding some though....

One of the first things I did to my truck was to solder all of the pins on the circuit board behind the gauge cluster so they make good contact. Then I took some emery cloth and brightened every pin so they make good connection to the connectors. ALL of the plugs to the sensors on the engine are much looser than I would like also. Wiggle them all and see if your temp gauge settles down. I don't remember just where the temp sensor is but it shouldn't be hard to find. Since yours goes to the hot peg I think that indicates a short in the lead to ground.

Thank's ya'll ,, I should have been more clear about the ' gauge " it ,, slowly moves over to the " H 'stopping at about 7/8 ( or a little more ),, found the sensor it's at the top back on the drivers side ,, has 1- wire . Put the amp probe on this AM ,, the 1- wire reads alternator amp. ( 13-14 amp),, ohm ,, starts at 1.4 goes up to about 2.7+- as the motor warms up ,, could it bee my gauge ,, how to ck. the gauge? Yes i'm ck'n the grds. as we talk.

I'M Back !!!,, ck'd. the sensor w/ amp probe ,, cold @ 2.6 let mtr. run 10-15 min. ck'd. sensor w/ probe reading dropped to .6-.4 ,, sensor good !!. Gauge slowly climbed to 3/4 mark ,then dropped back to center , like the therm. finally opened ,, opened rad. cap small spurt,, put finger in top hot but too hot ,, do ya' think water pump not circulating good ? Oh yea,, the gauge ck'd. out good . This old truck has never run over 1/2 ,, even when loaded.
( hope i'm not catch'n someone's BOAT CURSE ).

Let it warm up then shut it off and feel around the radiator with your hand, I will bet it's cool to cold in the center. That being said if the center is cool it cannot get the fan hub warm enough to go into lock up to cool the rad.

OK !!! Did the Jim Lane back flush,,,, turned on the water hose,, lite green ran out for 30-40 sec.,, then clear - clear water for the next 2 min. loosened the lower rad. hose ,drained out clear water . Going to get "new " antifreeze . nonrev,, will ck. the fan,, but the truck is not getting hot ,, just the cool gauge acting funny. The therm. dosesn't seem to open " early enough "to make the gauge return toward the cool side.( go figure ). Oh ! caught old antifreeze in 5 gal. bucket w/ lid ( got little critters ). Will yoller back.

HEY !!! don't want to jinks myself ( my truck ),, did the J.L. back flush,, new anti freeze ,, left the plug ( behind the therm. housing ) and poured in the antifreeze until I saw lite green start to coming out the hole ,, taped the plug screwed in the plug ,, finish fill-up w/ antifreeze,, capped ,, set the parking brake ,, put in drive let it run at idle ,,@ 8 &1/2 min. the gauge hand had moved over to 5/8 warm ,, 9 min. the hand dropped back down between the first two marks ,, stayed . Sooo ,, looking good so far. Will test out on the road later. MAYBE 368,, it needed a flushing ( someone did mention that ) .
