Re:New K&N Airfilter installed>>>Turbo Question?

Dave:

I have been eyeing that right turn-signal ever since I got my truck. If you do work something out, please let us know what you did and post some pictures! It seems like it wouldn't be too hard to do something . . . I just haven't figured it out yet. And that cool ram air would be a good thing.

By the way -- I run my K&N naked with the front mounting plate hanging from the fender and no box. I would think a fellow could buy some threaded rod and convert the '93 box to hold the filter onto the plate, then ditch the box if they were inclined . . . of course if you could find a used box, that would be good too.

I have also toyed with the idea of cutting a hole in the hood and putting a little ram scoop over the air filter . . . Can't decide if it would look mean, or stupid :-.

Re:New K&N Airfilter installed>>>Turbo Question?

One truck I saw at a campground was a big stretched 1st gen and he had a scoop under the bumper that looked like PVC. It appeared to just jut out under the bumper enough to catch the breeze and go up through the fender liner. Wouldn't be too bad if you were highway driving all the time.

There was a member on the TDR that cut away the facia under the signal light between the bumper and edged it with that stuff you buy for door edges. Pretty stealth ram air for the inlet to the filter..

Is there a ram air hood that you can put on a 1st gen. to help with air flow? I've seen them on second gens but not on a 1st gen.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with kooky ideas. I've been toying with the idea of getting one of those big chrome filters off a semi, mounting it to the turbo and cutting a hole in the hood so it'll close. If the truck was uglier, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Re:New K&N Airfilter installed>>>Turbo Question?

So from what I gather from all of you, is to delete the air box if possible or find a way that I can open the air box up. Time to put on the old thinking cap.
I also own a Large Car. I have a 2000 Pete 379 550 Cat 18 speed & 355 rears. I had to come off of the road about 2 years ago due to back problems. So now I have a driver that gets to enjoy the pleasure of my Large Car. But on the other hand it is nice being home everyday. Well anyway, sure would be nice to be abe to make the old pickup sound as good as it does.

I've also been thinking about ramming the air into mine, but my concern would be when it's raining, like yesterday,(like a cow taking a leak on a flat rock), wouldn't the water get sucked into the turbo, then the intake. I've seen water injection units for gassers, YEARS ago, but don't beleive it'd be too good for a diesel.

Actually the guys that pull sleds use water injection and loads of it.

I would be worried about water too if you run a paper element filter, or any filter I guess. The moisture will comprimise the filter and allow dirt through.

Ok, someone invoked the Pastor here........

Old man I'm sorry we didn't get around to the air box thing...next time, and the coffee is on me....

I just did what many have done. I bored 3 holes in a triangle shape each hole is about 2 1/2" in dia. two side by side above the stock inlet tube with one above those two. Then I made an oblong hole roughly the same diameter on the rear side of the airbox just above the fender skirt. When I had them done, I used some screen door screening and a glue gun.
Ok, it's not a piece of art but that ole HX35 just talks up a storm under there...You really gotta try one of these hybrids... all the howling under there has turned a couple heads to be sure.....

Re:New K&N Airfilter installed>>>Turbo Question?

After the WONDERFUL weather we had today and the 2 foot deep puddle I had to drive through to get home 'cause the snow was melting, I have decided to add another item to my design. A winter shut-off. That way, I can drive through all the puddles I want and not hydrolock my engine.
SO, back to the drawing board.

Centrifugal pre-cleaner. That is all you need. Or one of those water-proof filter covers that lots of fellas run on their big paper filter conversions.

Emperical analysis of air intakes, however, seem to indicate that it doesn't take much of a baffle to keep water (and snow) out and let the air in. So maybe an appropriately shaped elbow, etc., would do the trick?

The original intake just has a little bit of grill and vanity keeping it from the elements . . .

Re:New K&N Airfilter installed>>>Turbo Question?

You wouldn't think the filter element would let actual water dropplets into the air system if some water got on the filter. If anything it would just be harder to suck air through the filter wouldn't it. Unless you are going to use you truck as a submarine and submerge the filter in water then there might be a problem or two.

hey Dave aint Washington great! I got almost 6" of snow at my place which has now melted and blown every river out for late silvers and early winter steelies .

Paws, I live on the Pilchuck river, we have one of the best Steelhead runs in the state. And all this extra water has excited them to come up river I'm sure.
We only got 2" of snow but it was wet and heavy so it brought down a lot of trees. Oh well, we sat out in the motor home and watched all the fun on TV.
