New Cam

Who makes the best new (not reground) cam for the 1st gens? What would the difference be of a new cam compared to a reground?

I'm not trying to pry, but for the sake of me and everybody on this forum, could you tell us how you went from pulling the head to deciding that the cam was the problem. I didnt' follow the whole thread about pulling the head so i apologize if i am redundant to the problem. I'd just like to know how and why the cam (or whatever the problem is) was diagnosed as the problem.

Adam, seems to me that wasn't what he asked or said. I think he said:

I don't know Underpsi. KTA made really good power with the stock cam, so as far as I'm concerned, I'll stick with it. Cam = gasser mentality, IMO. Scheid, Haisley, Piers, DonM , and I'm sure a few others sell them.

A cam helps; but why does DonM get distinguished with a ?

Cams do more for diesels than make people look stupid for shelling out that kind of cash

Stuff like extending your weak powerband all the way out to redline, lower EGT's, lower boost (this makes your engine more efficient) and possibly better mileage.

I like a 12v as much as anyone, but they have a waaayyy too "peaky" powerband to do any good. They might hold a long pull on a hill like nothing else, but god forbid you actually need to drop a gear and pull something above 2400RPM. There is NO power up there when towing heavy.

That's why I have a Helix 2() ordered for the future

Chris

As far as Im concerned its alot easier to put a cam in w/o the head on. Piers only has reground for 1st gens. What would be the difference form a reground and brand new?

i would think, the difference could be a design that was optimized and actually worked.

Why wouldn't a cam designed for a 2nd gen 12valve work in a 1st gen 12valve? they are the same block with the main difference being the injector pump/ front gear case. So unless the Cam gear mounts differently I don't see why it wouldn't work.

One from a 2nd gen will work just fine,I run a 98 12vale cam in mine it makes all the differents. I got a good used cam from a low miles engine for $80.00. Way cheaper than piers cam,but if your out to make a full blowen street truck a piers cam is well worth it. A reground cam is not as durable as a stock cam. When u replace the cam get new cam lifters. A 97 or 98 cam is the best stock cam to replace the stock first gen cam other than a piers.

You can move the valve events (timing, duration) around a lot more on a new cam. A regrind limits you to minor changes to everything but lift. Also, a reground cam messes up the valvetrain geometry. You really should run longer pushrods with a regrind due to the smaller base circle.

Short answer - new cam = better.

im just dreaming right now it prob won't actually happen. I just got thinking last night that it wouldn't be that hard for me to pull the timing cover off and that and put a new cam in especially since the heads already off so its easier to get at. I don't really wanna spend that much money right now tho since power can still be made with ther stock one anyways

dont even bother with a regrind ive heard of em breaking. honestly ask schied, don m, piers, etc what the duration of the cam is over yours, not that much. i would go to a 97 or 98 303 grind used cam if i where u. for the money of the street cams theres just not enough lift unless ur running fly cut pistons. sure they'll tell ya they help but not as much as u think. I hate to buy stuff twice knowing that id like to have a nice set of fly cut marines that i could get alot more cam into.
