Needing a new fan clutch...which one?
^^ x2!! do the updated OEM's or any new one for that matter run quieter than these old ones? not that my fan is on all the time, but would be nice if it was a little quieter when it does switch on.
Can anyone explain how a fan clutch works?? Because for instance on my truck, I can go up to the fan and pretty much spin it by hand and it will spin pretty freely with the motor off of course.. Then I go up to my little bro's truck and I can barely spin it. feels like it is engaged.. Also while driving it sounds like it is engaged if you know what I mean.. So, what depics when they engage.. Thanks
they're thermally switched. i don't know exactly how, but my guess is that it engages at whatever temperature inside the engine compartment is equal to when the coolant temperature is approx. 180 when the thermostat opens. just a guess, i could be completely wrong.

TJE if he is pinning the fan to where it stays on you should gain speed to some extent. I had the same problem the other day I had a/c problems and couldn't get the pressures to stabilize. That's when I noticed the fan clutch acting up. I put a big shop fan up front to cool things and to get the pressures to stablize to finish up the a/c and to kinda tune it in. It now blows a refreshing 36* now I just need to do Jim Lanes a/c blower relay system.

I'm running 134a. I had a high pressure issue from something plugging a line. After pulling the lines off the compressor I flushed it 5 or 6 times. Reinstalled new o-rings and pulled a vacuum on it for 3 hrs. and just stopped for the night. The next day hooked up the vacuum and vacuumed for another 3 hrs but I lost no vac overnight, I just did this to make sure all the flush was out of the system. I have a thermometer in the vent and added 2 1/2 cans of 134a and had no bubbles. I quit and went to lunch to let everything kinda stabilize then rechecked and I found I had a very few bubbles then added the other 1/2 can and left it for the night. The next day I fired it up and no bubbles and the pressure was good. The vent temp will vary from 45* at 105* ambient temp with 65% humidity down to 27* at 85* ambient temp with 30% humidity. So i'm happy with that but need the Jim Lane blower upgrade to speed up the blower. Good luck with it.
