Need some direction please..

Hey guys i got the old girl this year for work (towing a 22' trailer full of equipment) it definitely was a huge improvement over my S10..haha... Now winter is coming up and i want to go through it and fix some problems for next year so this is were the questions come in.

I have a oil leak that is really bad. Its hard to see where its coming from because i power wash it and then go for a drive and by the time i get back home the oil is everywhere (all over the fan and alternator basically the whole front of the engine) Its not coming from the injection pump or the air pump or whatever its called so can anybody point me in the next place to look? I want to get the parts ordered now while i still have money before winter hits.

Second question is although it pulls allot better then the S10 it still has some problems getting up some hills. What can i do to help this situation a little?

And the last part and if you are still reading this i appreciate your patience! Sometime when im on the freeway towing to my next job going about 75mph the old girl gets really hot! It gets to about 3/4 of the way on the temp gauge sometimes higher. The truck is completely stock so im not sure why the egt's would be getting that hot specially since i haven't touched the pump YET! Is this a big problem i should be looking more into?

Thanx again this site and the people are the best!

If you want some free power to help with the hills then play with the pump. As long as you have your piro that is. here is the link from the sticky on pump adjustments.

have fun.

Thank You! I will mess with the pump and see what i can do. What is the max EGT you want to see? And what is a good balance of being safe and performance.

Thanx
Chris

Does it seem to be coming up from the bottom or down from the top?

Pull the fan hub and look for a crack in the timing housing from a dropped KDP. Could also be the front crank seal.

Honestly i would say its coming from the bottom but man the oil is everywhere including the hood. It could be the fan catching it i guess and throwing it around. Where can i order a new front seal if that is it? If its is a cracked housing im guessing i have to look into a junkyard?

Thank You
Chris

Cummins can sell you both parts, so can your local Case equipment dealer. Why not clean the motor off, pop off the belt, and idle it for 5 minutes or so to get a good fix on the location of your leak?

Could all that oil be coating your radiator and plugging it up?

ya this place is great and so are the people. hey i like your name!

I dont know if the oil could cause the truck to overheat like that its fine unless im driving on the freeway doing 75 maybe the truck just cant take that speed with a trailer?

Im going to powerwash the engine and do what wanna said and see where that problems lyes first. If only i could get a minute now from work.. or the kids hmm or the wife. Oh i did not just say that!

Gotta go

Get the kit with the repair sleeve and follow the directions to the letter - it won't leak.

First thing = install a decent mechanical water-temperature gauge and see what it is actually doing.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the accuracy of the factory gauges.

I didn't see whether the truck is manual or auto.

If an automatic, it can transfer a ton of heat to the coolant, when towing.

The radiators that come in these trucks are -- to my way of thinking -- way too small; and, I hear many complaints of running hot when towing.

Does the truck have a pyrometer ??

Pre-, or post, turbo ??

Truck is a manual. I'm in the process of looking for a reasonable prices pyro, boost, and was going to get a oil pressure but maybe water temp instead. Do you know of any reasonable prices gauges i can get? I have some DEFI gauges but i really don't think i want to install those in my work truck.

So is there a upgrade radiator for our trucks? If so were is a good place to pick one up?

I love my truck even though im new to the cummins im finding that it is allot harder to find after market parts for it then it is my evo

Oh and what location does everybody prefer to mount the pyro? Cylinder 1 or 6 before the turbo?

Thanks for the advice and will be looking forward for your input.
