Need to replace front gear case ????

I guess i am buried a bit deep with this one. gonna need a bit of help.
My kdp fell out and took the bolt that is right next to it with it, the kdp is nowhere to be seen and didn't do any damage to the gears that i can see yet. But the bolt took out the aluminum gear housing that the injector pump, cam gear, water pump, etc reside in. It is pretty bad, i talked to some friends that had a similar problem and they fixed it with jb weld, but i want to replace the whole housing. I can get a new one for 200 ish from cummins west.

Here is where i need help, does anyone know what i have to, and dont have to, pull apart. Can i pull the gear off of the front of the cam or do i have to pull the cam, if so any one with experience have any advice on what to do whith the cam hook it up.

Also i guess i gota pull the ps/vaccume pump and also the injector pump, any advice with these??

Thanks

I was reading somewhere about the cam and the cam gear, when cummins first started doing them they would pull the whole cam, but then they decided they could just pull the gear off, I'm not sure what they use to take the gear off, but it should be a whole lot less work than pulling the whole cam.

Sorry to hear about your KDP!

The cam gear is pulled with a puller similar to a steering wheel puller.

While you have the gear off, be careful not to push the cam back and knock out the welsh plug at the back of the motor.

The gear is reinstalled by heating it to 350 - 400 degrees in an oven.

I knew that there was something I was missing! But I knew it could be done.

I think a lot of oil will leak out, and ruin your clutch at the very least.

Yep. And to replace the plug, the trans and adapter have to come off the back of the engine.

Well i think i may have knocked mine out a little bit but there isn't alot and it has been about 1,000 miles and not even so much a a sign of a clutch slip. mine leaks about 1 quart a month or so out the back i though it was the rear main but now i am sure that it is that plug.

Thanks guys.

I dont think that i have the type of cam that is made to be pulled off. there is no threaded holes in the cam gear to bolt on a puller, nor does the cam have a tapped hole, but i know that is not needed.
I might be able to use some sort of 3 jaw puller, but other than that i think i may need some tips on removing the cam.

So the KDP got you at how many miles? This makes me want to fix it before it breaks.

KDP got me at 232,000 fix it it is not worth it. You can fix it yourself easily for hardly nothing oppsed to over 300$ in just parts that is just if it gets the cover if it gets the gear train oh boy $$$$!!! It is just a peice of mind i am glad it happend now i have the revised cover no worries. Although that would have been a great option the first time.
