Need another turbo??

Well, it finally happened... My turbo over-spun and is starting to rub the side wall. Good news is that the powerstroke didn't out run me .

I'm debating if i want a re-built HE351CW or get this vgt turbo working right. In the mean time i think i'm going back to stock and we'll see just how much better the 06 turbo was compared to the baby h1c(i think).

My other option is a HY35?? off a 2nd gen, a craiglist guy came to me with one for cheap.

Well i'll keep debating this and hope to hear back from you guys. I'll try and get some pictures of the barely visiable scrap inside the housing. I should also be hooked up for internet this week so i'll be able to be more active...

Thanks

How do you over spin a turbo? What causes that? At least you didn't lose the race lol.

you could throw the 60mm upgrade kit on your h1c and have a turbo that is just as good as the the he351.

Bill, i'm assuming when you spin the turbo fast enough to throw it out of balance? Maybe i just wore the bearings out... That thing was screaming though...

Let me explain what happened... my 40# gauge was burried and with a potato cannon like boom, i blew a 6 layer boot apart. After pulling the intake side to re-install said boot, i noticed a slight scratch in the compressor housing.

I'd consider the upgrade archer, but i'm not sure if i wan't to spend more $$ just yet. I'm going stock for a little while. :,(

On another note: i "think" i figured out how i'm going to operate the HE351VE turbo...it isn't a vgt upon further inspection.

i always like the big black cloud that comes after the boom of an intercooler boot.

Whatever you do don't get an Hy35 you'll blow that up the first or 2nd test run....

How is it not VGT ? Does it have the lever on the side of it ? If it's off a 6.7 it's VGT

I loved my HY35 before i had my HE351, but yeah I think you'll have the same problem and overspin that one too. I had my HY35 pushin 35 lbs of boost and mine went right after I was racing too. the compressor wheel rubbed on the housing pretty good, I got it really hot and didn't let it cool down and I think i cooked the bearings. I like to call the HE351, the hy35's big brother cuz it has a bigger compressor side and 4" outlet, but still has the quick spooling 9cm housing as the HY35 does. I think my HY35 spooled a little quicker than this HE, but it couldn't keep top end as cool as this HE. It wouldn't be a bad turbo if you got it real cheap. I got my Hy35 for free so i didn't lose much there, i just learned some things. I would probably try and rebuild that HE351, is the compressor wheel still good? and not scraped up too bad? I think you can get rebuild kits for like $40. Or that vgt may not be a bad choice. Don't worry i've been in your shoes, that hy35 was way fun while it lasted, with the h1c back on its gonna feel like a laggy dog.

Brandon, it is variable... but its an HE351VE per sticker on side of unit. It moves in and out of the exhaust housing. Other ones i've seen have veins that open and close like a camera lens.

Well my H1c is back on... talk about a freight train and lack of power. I think i lost 50 HP or more!! All the torque is still there on the bottom end but then its just a cloud and slow acceleration. No more seat of the pants feeling. I think the re-build kit is 120 bux I'm gonna see what e-bay brings on that baby.

So we started working on the variable turbo last night, and came up with 3 GOOD ideas and we're trying two of them tomorrow. Need to make the brackets and what not ;-)

VGT = Variable Gate Turbine

Same efect as the vane type but lots sturdier and will probably last lots longer.

Foxtrot, i think its determined by how much play you have end to end and back and forth. If its rubbing the housing at all i'd say its time for a rebuild for time for a new turbo. Another thing to look for is oil build-up, when the seals start to go you actually burn your motor oil whether it goes through the motor or not, its still not all going back into the pan.
