Question name that leak

Hi there,
this is a wonderful site and I have learned so much already, thank you!

I bought this truck at the end of january. Some dents and the hood paint is funny, but really clean other than that. 114k now.

I can't get my head up there to see where this leak or leaks is coming from. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your time. And thanks to BC for the "how to post pictures".

I would have a look at the lift pump, mounted drivers side lower rear of engine block.

you might also have an issue with the transfer case vent hose.

its recent history for me, having dealth with both problems.

tks,

Clean out your vents and wash the transfer case down really good (ie a powerwash). I had both of my t-case driveshaft seals leaking on me and making an absolute mess underneath. Yours is an auto so maybe a seal is shot on the tranny itself? Regardless, take it to a carwash and give it a good cleaning, you should be able to identify where the leak is coming from then. Also check your fluid levels and see which ones are lower than they should be.

Hope this helps

At one time there was tranny fluid leaking at the rear seal or someone went nuts with the grease gun there, it slung oil or grease on the exhaust there if you look at it. I would look towards the fuel lift pump too, diesel fuel leaks travel a long ways back under the truck if there is a leak.

Power wash everything under there and monitor to see if it is even currently leaking. Get a set of rain gear, your going to get wet...

I thought I was the only one that got the optional Dodge Automatic Rustproofing Kit on their truck.

I sometimes check leaks based on smell. find a fresh drip bout ready to drop, rub between yur fingers, and what does it smell like? - fuel, tranny fluid, gear oil, antifreeze? Then you can search with some idea of what yur lookin for! Of course with this method yur smeller has to be workin!

thanks

thanks for the ideas. lift pump would explain why I have been getting about 15mpg. I can smell the ATF fluid when it gets hot. I'll look at the transfer case as well-------things seem to come in threes.
thanks again

Well, a 15+ year old truck is gonna have leaks. Hopefully yours will be easy to fix. Looks like you got a nice truck.

i just replaced a leak that looked exactly like that and my transfercase was just about as paked with oil as yours is, it turned out to be the rear output shaft seal for the driveshaft, if you wanna be extra sure that it's sealed you can put 2 seals on one behind another and then you have two seals incase any get past the first one.

Lift pump has a little fuel stain less than 6" around it. Actually looks like some of the fluid that has travelled back is just sloppy engine oil changes. From the oil filter there is a clear trail moving back. I'll look into the output shaft seal tomorrow.
It's definitely tranny fluid spraying on to the bottom of the bed. stuck the camera up in there, but still can't see anywhere it's coming from. It is shooting up because that's the only place that's fresh.
I'll post the pics tomorrow. thanks for the advice.

Question

Here is the top of the tranny. can't see any source for the fluid. took it to a guy today. He took a pan and wrench and loosened the transfer case-nothing came out-said the seal was good. He thinks its the diesel tank

Well good for you!

Seems like I've had leaks off and on ever since I've owned mine.
