Mystery noise???

There is a fairly loud, deep, ringy whack, sounds to be about the speed of 1 cyl, coming from my motor. It is loudest under the truck at the flywheel cover, can be heard at left side of engine, not at right while standing next to truck with hood open. Does not do it cold. Local Cummins mech says cracked flexplate, seasoned Dodge- Cummins mech says some do it, some don't. Has replaced flex plate at dealership, no fix. The other 1st gens I'm around make the same sound, but mine is much louder. Timing advance or retard does not change it. Have never heard a 2nd gen do this. Does anyone KNOW what this is?? It's driving me nuts! Thanks Jeff

I have to agree. Sounds like a cracked flexplate. Kinda a tingy ringing knock. Sound will go away at times when engine rpm changes. Rev it up slightly and let off and listen to ssound going away.

My 95 does that as you describe. More noticable when the rear slider is open. Mines a 5 speed so the flex plate isnt an issue and my 93 when the flex went out I never heard the ring noise.

The flex plate on my truck went from tickety boo to crapped out in less than 5 miles.
It started as a sound like a rock in a tire...slowly it began to sound more like a large rock, then a metalic sound like a large nail or screw until, finally it sounded like a bunch of marbles in a large tin can...4 blocks later, it was all over but the snarling of the driver....does this sound familiar????

You can get an upgrade flexplate that will hold pretty much all the HP we are putting thru these things, unless of course your in the upper 3-4 HP bunch...up there, all bets are off...you'll need to go to a full out high end flexplate.
PDR has the upgrade unit that I and a number of others are running and I am happy with mine. I went out and beat on it major large and it is still solid.

That just about sounds correct Bushy. I know when my 1st flex plate went, I thought it was the #6 piston. (hence buying Nascar Mark's motor. , only to find out it was a flex plate). But a year later when my 2nd flex plate went, I knew EXACTLY what it was and didn't drive it a foot further. Hate the old school of hard knocks, but it does teach us something...

My truck makes this noise you describe but it makes it about every 3-4 seconds. It can't be the flexplate on my truck as i have a manual. I've asked a few people, and they said it could be a valve spring, or it could be noise resonating (spelt right?) from the flywheel.

I don't really know what it is, but it's been like that since i got it so it ain't bothering me too bad. I can hear it on the left side of the motor the best as well as in inside the cab.

It could be you've got a kacked out spring in your pressure plate....I don't have a lever/pedal truck so you'll have to get a gear grinder, stick yankin, pedal pushin ****** to confirm this though...

.....besides, who wants all the extra work...it cuts into my snooze time on the highway....or whatever else I'm distracted by...sorta....

I had a spring come out of a clutch disk on a SBC didn't really notice any noise, but it eventually got stuck to where I couldn't disengage the clutch!!

Spring in the pressure plate could be the problem now that i think of it. It has made that noise since i got it but i notice it does grind from gear to gear if i don't shift fast.......which is very odd.

So i just shift it a little faster, and double-cluthing stops the grind as well. 30,000 KM on the rebuilt getrag........so go figure
