No such thing as dumb questions, only dumb people who don't ask and suffer as a result.

Welcome to the board.

My 92 was 160 hp 400 torque. I am sure yours is about that. I personally prefer dello 400 oil. every 5,000 miles. As for the miles, Ive got 240,000 and going strong.if you arent over 500,000 then I would'nt worry about it. I dont think that mods. hurt these trucks at all. All your doing is making the engine run the way it was designed to. Transmission? sure it can be done, but you'll need a lot of parts from a stick doaner to do it. As for the question's. these guy's like to answer them. It keeps their brains well lubed. so keep asking, and keep the brains from rusting.and welcome to the slippery slope. {I mean board}

That's what makes this site so great. Even though you always want to promote your own site, the members and administration will go out of their way and refer you whatever is needed to get the information and help you need even if it's a competing website.
That's the true quality of the members and administration.

I personally what to say thanks. You've opened up alot of eyes to the amount of information and help available on this site.

How much HP and TQ does my motor have? - 89 to 93 factory rating 160hp 400ftlb torque.
How long can this motor last ( in milge I mean)? - with routine maintainance, longer than the truck lol. ~ 500k miles, aka The Million Mile Engine.
How often do I change the oil and whats the best oil to use? - Owners manual states, every 6k miles or 6 months. Best to use, as long as its 15w40 and you change it often, keep it clean etc, brand shouldn't matter IMO.
If I mod my motor does that help motor life or hurt it? - it can both ways.
what is the MAX RPM my motor will go? - how many R's do you wanna turn?
And I have an auto trans can I convert to a manuel? - yes, but as said earlier, you're better off to just buy another truck for a manual.
I know diesels smoke but what smoke should I watch for? - blue smoke not so good, white smoke under certain conditions is ok. I wouldn't worry too much about the smoke. You have an old mechanical diesel engine, its gonna smoke.
Thanks for any help here I kow you guys are thinking that I have no business ith a diesel but I hope with all the help I can get here to become a pro. - we all gotta start somewhere. In no time, you will be a pro, helping others out, sharing your experiences.

sho_shane WELCOME aboard.
Don't worry about asking questions, there are alot of good info to be had if you ask
The one thing that I recommend is use your truck for a few months BEFORE you start the BOMBing process (Better Off Modified Baby!)
and before you bomb get gauges( pyro, boost & trans temp)

And by all means, If in doubt... ask. We dont bite

Good luck with the truck,
Michael

PS if you dont want everyone to see what your asking, you can PM (private message) anyone by clicking the little blue box under that persons post.

There is a kit that includes about everything except pedals to convert from auto to manual, the good nv4500, and it runs about $3500. Depending on what you want to do with the truck if you just get a good rebuild on the auto, by someone who knows what their doing, it will hold up just fine.

I change the oil every 3000 miles or so and use Rotella, you just want to make sure that its oil that is made for diesels!!

Stock governer spring starts defueling about 2600rpms, with some turns of the screws you can pull hard to 2800, and with a spring how many do you want to turn?

Black smoke good
