The temp range is set to open at 270. When the line temps drop to 240 it is supposed to close agin.

Hmm, well, thats about right then. I need to install a gauge to monitor tranny temps. Are there any that are easy to install or made for the 1992? I am pretty sure I am not burning tranny fluid, but I don't wanna cook the tranny by jumpering this out and leaving it if there is a problem with building heat for some reason.

I like the looks of Nordskog's tranny gauges because alot of them support the ability to connect an external warning device (buzzer/alarm) for high temperatures... and they are fancy digital AND you can get them in green or blue instead of boring red. But good god they are expensive, it would be possible to sink a grand into gauges before all is said and done.

There are no kits for installing a temp gage inline for our trucks. A lot of people that use the hot line removes the stock temp sender and installs a T in its place and then uses both sides of the T for the senders.

OK, so jumping the thermal cutoff switch did not help - still kicking out after a few miles of interstate driving. Now I am out of ideas, is it time to just drag it to the transmission shop and bite the bullet?

Does the voltmeter jump around when it's hunting OD?

Before you take it to the shop I'd wire up a manual override to make certain whether the problem is a control problem (most likely) or mechanical. If you wire a switch to a good ground and then to the wire on the OD solenoid that is NOT blue, you should be able to drop it in and out of OD on command (assuming you are in 3rd gear). If it still hunts you have a trans problem.

I just did wannadiesel's "not blue" wire to ground today and found that my trans works properly. I put a toggle switch in the jumper to ground and am able to control my od for now until I get the electrics worked out. My "not blue" wire was red.

Why bother to fix any of this stuff then if I can just short circuit it and put a manual switch in? Thats an easy fix and I don't mind flipping a switch. Or is there a disadvantage to doing this?

If I understand wannadiesel correctly, If you forget to turn off the switch the tranny will go 1 to 2 to O.D. On my 91.5 I can switch the pcm wire to ground and have things function. You may be able to do the same with yours.

Well, I am cleaning out old thread subscriptions and figured I had better update this with a solution. I finally did locate the problem.

It was the spring that goes to the throttle kickdown at the throttle linkage. The spring was replaced with a weenie spring by the previous owner and that wasn't pulling hard enough. So if you hit a bump just the right way, it would momentarily jump out of overdrive and then hunt back and forth. What I ended up putting in its place was a screen door spring that I bought at Lowes. The spring was like $3 and was about 12" long when I got it, I trimmed off what I need and put it in. Its just right. Gives just the right pedal feel and I have had not a single OD slip since.

Below are a couple of pictures of the thing installed for those interested.
