My first modification

My truck is bone stock. It has 80K orig miles. I bought this truck for towing my enclosed trailer (7k) long distance on interstate over hilly and semi-hilly terrain.
A couple of ya'll suggested I cannge the governer spring for better highway power and driveability. This modification makes sense and I decided to do it. I just got the spring and I am getting ready to install it. Should I put it in and see what happens first or should I make other changes while I am at it? Such as changing the cone position or washer delete or other stuff?
I DO NOT want to reduce my fuel economy!

Thanks in advance................
Roy

Your first mod should be gauges. This way you can monitor what is going on with the engine and not melt a piston.

Good luck, Tony

That makes sense. I assume a pyro gauge is in order?

Are you saying I can melt a piston by simply changing the gov. spring and nothing else? If that is the case, I will leave it stock.

Pyro and boost. If you have an automatic, a trans temp gauge would be a good idea as well. After that, fuel pressure and tach are nice to have and can aid in diagnosis.

No, the 3200 RPM spring will not melt anything. Put the fuel screw back to where it was when you started the install and the EGT will not be any hotter.

get the pyro, oil, boost and fuel, tranny temp, 3200, give a couple turns of the fuel screw, then start saving for tranny work, I think its is termed the "slippery slope". BEWARE, this is a very, very, addicting, and expensive hobby.

1/8 timing bump and 3200 gov. will be a big difference.

then get gauges and save$$ for a torque converter

Roy3 get your gauges in and tune her up. You will sure enough like the truck then. My 92 with the auto "needs converter, and a turbo housing" is kinda doggy but not for long. Got outrun by a stock chevy 6.5 turbo redlight to redlight, the Goat "it's embarrassed" is parked until I have time to fix the problem. It gets addictive. Some guys have turned up their trucks and improved the fuel mileage. Have fun and good luck.
