OK, y'all love this...
Driving this afternoon, go to down shift as i go around a corner and the BLANK-BLANK gear shift lever falls off in my hand.....
Oh, its come unscrewed.....nooooooooooo
It has broken off, right down at the base of the threads on the gear selector. The shift lever apearantly wasn't screwed on all the way, and the threaded portion of the gear selector isnt made to shift with.....
Thank God for vise grips!!( greatest invention ever) I was able to get home. Now I am trying to figure out where I can find parts for a Getrag, and how big a job is this?
I am not sure if its something I should try to tackle myself( tranny's scare me)
I dont have to tear open the whole tranny to replace the selector do I?
any advise would be apreciated!

No. I think worst case scenario, you will have to take out the snap ring that holds the bottom of the selector lever in the tranny cover, and put in a new selector . . . No clue where to get one, though. I suppose I would get on the phone and try the big transmission houses, like drivetrain specialists . . .
What a PITA

well, I have spent this morning calling over a dozen salvage yards, parts suppliers , ect. and NO-ONE has this darn thing....
The dealer wants $235 for it and says it will take 2-3 weeks to get!

Gertrag items
That critter there supercedes to two part #'s 52107531 and 52078199. These are 93 part #'s. They are that expensive but your dealer should have them in three days, max. I could.

Thanks Hobie, but I found one yesterday at a yard in Fla. for $20.00, with the bolt on shift rod. I have learned that the threaded selector lever that I am replacing was done away with in mid-91 and replaced with the bolt-on style. This is considered part of the shifter assy, not the tranny, and several yards told me they torch through it when removing the tranny, and dont salvage it. Makes no sense to me, but I'm not in the salvage business....
BTW, I took a 24 inch length of 3/4 galvanized pipe, tapped it down over the selector lever where it broke, drilled through it and ran a couple small bolts through them and have a nice new red-neck shifter!
