The best way is to loosen all of the axle nuts but don't take them completely off. Then hit either the side of the axle flange or directly in the center with a hammer to break it loose. Then remove the nuts and slide it out.

To answer the first question, yes, we can upgrade to the GM wheel cylinders. I personally wouldn't, if anything I think my stock back brakes are too aggressive with the truck empty. You might want to see how it is with new shoes and proper adjustment.

I'm running generic Advance Auto Parts (Wearever Silver is their house brand) shoes. Squeal a bit, but they are aggressive. You can really feel the rear brakes work.

The info on setting the hub nut is in the tech facts. Torque on the axle bolts is 70 ft.-lb. Did you need any other torque specs?

I just take all the bolts out and whack the end of the axle until I see it drop. Usually only takes 1 or 2 whacks with the 2 lb. mini sledge. All you're doing is shocking the RTV or gasket seal so it lets go of the axle flange.

I like to leave the nuts on loose while I whack the axle because I'm not to accurate with a hammer as my swelled up black and blue left index finger shows. A dinged up nut is easier to replace that a dinged up stud.

Ah. I didn't realize your antique had studs. Modern trucks like mine have bolts.

Heck! I didn't know there was anything else. Besides I like my antiques except when I went to the Dodge dealer for some hood bumpers and they tell me they've been discontinued. Comeon! It's only 16 years old!
