I purchased the new control rod kit with new metal rod-ends and threaded rod a couple weeks ago. I finally installed it on Monday this week. I took a jewelers file to part of the breakover spring because when the rod-end rolled towards the engine, it would catch on the little "leg" of the spring. The file didn't remove much material but enough to make clearance for free movement.
Along with the new control rod, I also replaced my AFC top screws with new stainless hardware that I picked up from Fastenal. Grade A2 - M6 - 1.0 x 14mm socket cap screws with Grade A4 - M6 flat washers. Now I can use a "T" handle alan wrench and easily remove the screws for starwheel adjustments or fuel pin changes. The screws were $0.25 each and the washers were $0.16 for a total of $1.79. If I had ordered from their website, I would've been charged $7 shipping
. A little ridiculous for 4 bolts and washers
. I called Fastenal and made my point about the shipping cost and asked if they could order them for me and put them on will call. They gladly did so and I picked them up and installed them this morning. If only I had painted my AFC top to clean it up, things would look a lot better!
Oh, and I finally removed the protective cap on my smoke screw. I adjusted it out about .050" which should be just enough to center the AFC pin between the bottom of the fuel pin and start of the profile on the M3.

I bought just the ends last week. Got them from my local tractor/implement dealer and they ordered the cummins parts in for me. It was just over $8 each, he first quoted me $12 each but then later he quoted $8, not sure what happened.

It looks like it is but it's all still there. I have a piece of short length of 1/8" stainless tubing cut into a half-round to make up for the small movement before the throttle control lever moves, due to the small notch in the pin that comes up through the middle of the breakover spring's legs. Here's a better look at it...

I replaced my original breakover spring shortly after I got the truck about 2 years ago. It was definitely worn through. So much so that the leg snapped off while trying to remove it.
