I hear you BHD.
Yeah I have bought total rust buggies just for a good running 12V and a few small parts for more than that!
I would say it is safe to say you couldn't find a major enough problem worth asking for your money back today.
I would buy that truck for $2000 with a softball size hole in the block.

You guys are gonna crap when I tell you this one- two years ago, more like 1.5 years, I was at the mailbox getting mail, and my neighbor was there, also. Got to talking about when I was gonna fix my pond and I asked him about that lonely first gen just sitting there under the oak trees. He said he just inherited it from his dad, and since I showed interest, he asked me if I wanted to buy it. He said the fuel gage doesn't work, and the head liner was trashed. I asked, well how much? He said.....wait for it..... $500!!!
My mistake was, I didn't cut him a check right then and there. He got to talking to his dad about the truck, I'm *** uming, and when I called him two weeks later he said he was gonna hang onto it for awhile. All right, just keep me in mind when the time comes to sell, I said.

Well, he just bought a brand new Chevy pickup, 2017, and it is a beauty. Well he has no need for the first gen anymore, as he only used it to haul his garbage container up his dirt road to the pick up spot, every Friday am. And, like I mentioned earlier, he mentioned that it was going to a good home
Still, I'm happy with the $2K. I know what these trucks are worth. Looking at it again this am, it still has the original factory paint, with no flake off.

I was looking at SDeva's sale of his truck. He put it on CL, and it was gone in 30 minutes. Hmmmmm.....options. Around here, this is country boy town. That first gen would be sold in no time. But, I like back up, and having a second one waiting in the wing is nice.
I got a feeling it won't be long, that my wife out grows the newness of that thing, when she looks at the insurance bills, LOL.

Hey, Augie, you know that a self respecting first gen owner can't drive a rig with no headliner, so I would be happy to give you what you paid for it. You don't even have to deliver it. Seriously nice buy, congrats...Mark Edit: Hey Augie, give Hagertys a call and see if they are willing to insure them now, that would be sweet...

Well, 4x4 works, but now I can't get the shifter to pop back out of 4x4.
Other findings:
1. Oil soaked oil pan and bell housing, including the underside of the cab. Probably a rear main seal. Expected.
2. Transfer case has about an inch of oil. Hmmm.
3. Transmission, all painted purple in color. Thought it was just the pan, but it's the entire transmission. Without any paperwork, can't tell if it's aftermarket. Will ask neighbor.
Glad I kept all my IC piping, and boots, from when I did the Powerstroke IC conversion. I can toss in my old, but better boots on.
4. Power steering hoses are oil soaked, dried, and will need replacing.

Ok, soaked the shift tower and input shafts to the transfer case with WD40, and now it shifts in and out of 4x4. The wipers do not work, along with the A/C. Got my work cut out for me, and still okay with it.

Did you try backing up about 20 feet and try to take it out of 4X4 as it is still rolling a little? I don't know about an auto, but that is what I need to do with mine sometimes...Mark

The lube, along with a few taps with a rubber mallet to the shift stalk did it

Most of the time backing up works, but sometimes I have to modify it...

Back mine up in a straight line for 50 feet or so. Turn the truck OFF. Pops right out.... every time.

Start the truck up and I'm on my way.

Will the factory (inerenal) hubs go into the Free position while locked. If so unlock them and as soon as there is some slack the hubs will disengage if they work right. then the transfer case will shift easily.

More findings:
1. A/C doesn't work. Blowing cool air, not cold. Going to order a 4" Beckson plate and clean out that for sure rats nest in the evap coil
2. Valve covers all leak. There's an oil mess out of valve cover #6. Minor stuff. Need to order new valve cover gaskets, and do a valve job while I'm at it.
3. Bearing sounds coming from the fan pulley. Order that part from Genos
4. Belt tensioner, belt, and water pump replacement for sure.
5. Already picked up fluids and filters from Orileys.
6. Windshield wipers don't work. Funny thing, is the owner said it had brand new wipers. Motor is probably shot. I have one stashed from a gasser first gen another neighbor was parting out, years ago.
7. The brakes are all going to get replaced- shoes and pads. Unsure if I'm going to upgrade the rears to 3" shoes and 1 1/8" cylinders. I have a brand new raybestos master cylinder, which I was saving for my other truck. Won't need it now cause of the recent HB conversion. Also have the booster. Might save that swap for later, as the brakes on this new truck still work pretty good.
8. Still have to check on why the brake light and abs lights are on, on the dash.
9. All vac lines in engine bay will get changed.
10. So far fusible links "look" good, but will have to tear into them to verify.
11. Almost forgot, and this should probably be on top of the list- KDP fix
