Looking at 2 1st gens for friends

2 different friends of mine are looking looking at 2 1st. gens to buy.

One is a 93, has 336,000 miles, 2 wheel drive, reg. cab, auto. Says it needs rear brakes. The guy is asking $2,000 for it and runs it all the time.

The other one is a 90 reg. cab, 5-speed, 4x4, snow plow, has 100,000 miles. Older gentleman owns it, says its in excellent shape. He's asking 7,500.

I'll probably go look at them this weekend. My question is are the prices they are asking reasonable or not.

I know what to look for, but I haven't seen them yet and don't know what the bodies look like.

I'd jump on the 2wd in a heartbeat--it's worth twice the asking price in pieces! The guy could buy it, part it out and start fresh with 4k in his pocket. The '90 is a bit steep. If it's here local in the north-east, it's been exposed to salt while plowing, so how clean can it be, really? Plows are very hard on front-end parts. It should have a kingpin d-60, though, but watch for worn tie-rod ends, drag link etc etc. Pastor Bob told me to watch the non i/c trucks that had been plowed, fwiw. The plow market is pretty lame this year due to no snow, so if the buyer was planning on selling the plow to get some money back, he'd better be prepared to only get 1k or so for a good used unit.

I've gotta 2wd I part out for $3000 . To me it sounds like a fair deal about normal. I've seen some 2wds go for less with less miles. And just because he drives it everyday doesn't mean the whole steering system isn't shot, leaks fluid everywhere, electrical nightmare, etc etc.

Well, I went to look at the 93 today. Lower driverside door hinge is broken, roof above the cab is rotted through. The bed is in better shape than mine, I'll probably buy it if he doesn't.

Engine fired right up and sounded good. Everything sounded good there. Trans shifted fine. Has an extra cooler under the bed on the drivers side.

JD, if you get that '93 as donor truck, I know of a dually longbed crew cab that would make a nice conversion.

If the '93 needs rear brakes, you can expect to pay $3,000 to get the things fixed.

Brakes = Manical Shooting-Spree Inducing Waste of Money...

(At least that's my experiece...)

If you do the work yourself (like JD730 would) you can completely replace the rear brakes, drums and all, for less than $400. Heck, a disc conversion is less than $3k.

Oh, thank you, trying to make me feel better I see...

You're saying that the drums don't cost $400 a piece?

$70 each unless you're buying them from an extortionist.

Tell me about this crew cab, thats what I've been looking for. Dodge or ford crew cab for a reasonable amount of money.

JD, sent you a PM.

RWD, I'll get an email out to you midweek when I know more about the truck. It's a D350 gasser from the looks of it, are you sure you're interested? It would take a lot of work to get it rolling as a 4x4.
