3rd Gens are slow in the 1/4 mile compared to 2nd Gens. Why????
I was sitting there at work the other day (slow day) and decided to poke around a little on the forums and compile dyno verified HP numbers and the 1/4 mile times those folks are running from the users that have both posted. We don’t have a dyno in the state anywhere and I was curious as to what kind of power I am putting to the ground, roughly.
I noticed pretty quick that most of the 2nd Gens that are putting out roughly 510hp or more are able to run the 1/4 mile in 12.9's easily. On the other hand, all of the 3rd Gens that are posting HP numbers in the 570hp to 580hp range are only able to run the quarter in mid to high 13's. I only ran across a few 3rd Gens that had 12.9's posted and they had dyno numbers in the 620hp+ range.
Anyone know what the problem is here? The 2nd Gens can't be that much lighter. Any guesses as to why it is taking almost 100hp more to get a 3rd Gen into the 12s? That is a pretty significant difference. I know my rig is heavy at 8,000lbs and the big tires don’t help, but most of the 3rd Gen rigs I was looking at in the 570hp range had stock tires on and no add-ons that would indicate it was extremely heavy. Has to be something else…..

Has anyone considered the transmission gearing ratio in each gear? I have not drivien a 2nd gen that had a auto trans so maybe some one can chime in here on that. My truck seems to accelerate slower in 1st and second, but once in third and the TC locks up the thing comes alive. The slower acceleration in those lower gears has to cost some time in the 1/4 mile. Wonder what the 60 ft. times are for a 2nd gen vs. a 3rd gen. I raced a buddy of mine awhile back and he has a 2nd gen with the five speed. Off the line we were even, them he started to pull away a bit. After I hit 3rd gear and lock up I started to gain on him. Are trucks have about equal HP and TQ numbers.

My truck with just the tst and big turbo (462 H.P. according to T.S.T.)runs 13.65. It runs 12.97 with a tst stacked with downloader.I pulled off my cat and swapped out my muffler and did a 12.85.This all with a tranny that is still not set right.According to Mark Chapple there is not a third gen out there making over 500 h.p.Not sure if this is true or not . I have never had my truck on a dyno.Trucks weighs 7350 pounds.

I've noticed that 2nd gens putting down the exact same hp always seem to make more torque than a 3rd gen. Maybe that's why. Have you noticed any of their 60 ft times? When I dyno'd a couple years ago there was a 12 valve that had the same hp as my truck but his tq was over 150 more than mine....

Oh well.Mine OUTPULLS easily my FIRST and 2ND generations with ease and fuel mileage about the same. Both my others had far more performance mods then this truck. This truck feels and drives with a 10k trailer like it would and could pull the others butt end down the road without much ado.

3rd Gens are new and improved. The driver need not bother with horsepower and torque, the computer will decide how fast you need to go, and what gear to do it in.

I agree. I don't know what causes the rated torque numbers to be lower on 3rd gens either. Is it tuning? Injection events maybe? I know at Lewisville dyno day........my truck made 280 hp / 528 torque. But BIG BLUE's truck..an 01......made 260hp but 600 torque.
You would think the hp and torque numbers would kinda run somewhat parallel with each other on the same basic engine block and similar hp numbers.

Most 3rd. gens. are 4 door quad cabs and are heaver than 2nd. gens. Mine weighs over 6900 lbs. with half a tank. I believe you would see a tenth second for every 200 lbs.

The good thing about electronics is they can be fooled into doing whatever you want. I don't think that is the issue. Torque Management can be totally taken out of the equation. Boxes like the TST twins version bring fuel on instantly, not waiting to see any appreciable amount of boost. I think Scotty summed it up best implying the 3rd Gens are at a disadvantage from the start in the following areas, costing you:
Weight 30HP
tires/wheels 25HP
frontal surface 20 HP
ECM 25 HP
Every little area adds up I guess.
