bad news guys, I sent Mike the link and he said that the spring in the Delphi pump is cylindrical, not cone shape like on the link of the two pumps ( hi and lo pressure ) taken apart. Looks like it would be a wash. Cheap pump with regulator or ~ 200 bucks for the lo pressure one. Sorry for tall the hassles.

Not necessarily the wrong pump, just a different builder.

Lucas/Delphi/CAV is a respected fuel-system company with a big European following, plus many American agricultural equipment companies use their stuff.

Carter also builds the piston-pumps.

To my knowledge, Cummins themselves never built any of them.

Seeing as how the number is correct, I would almost bet that the pumps are correct.

Has anyone installed one and checked the pressures ??

good point BK, I haven't had a chance to look at it myself but I think it does have the smaller piston inside. I have to replace the front seal on the IP on my 1991 I'd hate to blow it out as soon as I get it all back together though... How can we check the pressures static, hook up a test stand?

To check it out poor-man's fashion, plumb the VE-pump to draw from a gallon-jug, while the piston-pump is mounted on the engine and pumping THROUGH the filter and through an almost-closed cut-off valve to simulate pushing against the VE, of course with a fuel-pressure gauge connected.

You can just hose the fuel back into the tank's filler-cap.

Fire up the engine and observe the gauge.

This should give you a pretty good idea of what the pump is going to do.

If you have the VE off to do the seal(s), go ahead and have a snap-ring groove machined to retain the big seal.

There were several pictures of this around here somewhere and it looks to be a permanent cure.

according to the Delphi PDF... http://dieselaftermarket.delphi.com/...09DDSU501F.pdf

The HFP702 is only listed once, as a piston style pump for a 4Bt.

For the Dodge 1994 and up it references Delphi HFP916 as the piston pump for those engines...

So I know that the 702 may be for a 4bt with a p pump I'm not entirely sure, there is a diaphragm pump app for the 4bt and 6bt as well .. I am going to install it and read you the pressures when I get my engine up. I am getting the fuel tank today.

this pump is different than the one I bought from cummins, different casting etc...

Appreciate you running the front door on this one. I'm still awaiting arrival of my pump.

look at the very bottom of page 9. it lists the feed pumps. they have a piston pump for 6B and 6BT series 5.9L. one piston pump (HFP701) doesn't have a primer button on it and the other (HFP700) has the primer button the bottom. the HFP700 is also used on 6C and 6CT series 8.3L motors.

Subject: HFP702

Mike,

The HFP702 is a replacement pump for Cummins part number 3936320. While their may be some slight differences in appearance the HFP702 will me the specifications of the 3936320 Cummins pump. I hope this answers your question.

if anyone is interested, i just called cummins to inquire about prices. here's the breakdown for the low pressure piston lift pump and the rest of the parts and numbers (new as of today Aug. 2009) needed for the job:

Low Pressure Piston LP: #4988751 | $186.61
Fuel Supply Line: #3914753 | $35.74
Fuel Supply Line Seals (Banjo in Filter Head): #3963983 | $1.27 ea.
Gaskets: #3939258 | $2.10 ea.
Spacer: #3914284 | $12.86

Total: $241.95 before tax

hopefully delphi can do better on the pump price and maybe the other parts as well!
