Just filled up with $3.71 Diesel
If your running a stock torque converter there isn't a lot to do except the usual stuff, keep your tires aired up tight, bump your timing a little, drive like there is a raw egg between your right foot and the fun pedal and keep the air filter clean.
Synthetic lube in the axles helps. We don't get a winterized fuel blend here but I have heard that it dosen't help the mileage much either.
You can also try running a good fuel system cleaner if you aren't already doing so.
If you want to get serious about mileage, get a new higher efficient torque convert. I think the stock one is only around 67% efficient. That is unless you have the very rare A618 transmission.

What kind of fuel cleaner is there?
I'm currently just adding Penz. oil/gas mix to it for added lubricity . When the trans goes, I'll go that route, but things are way too tight right now to do anything other than easy simplified mods. Something about the mortgage coming first that my wife keeps spurting..

Any links or "keywords" I could use to do a search ?
Thank you both for the ideas. I was pretty stoked that the truck got nearly 14mpg, as it was, but if it's possible to improve that, I'm all ears.

Mark, everyone has an opinion. To have an opinion is a right. To express that opinion is a right. They have graciously provided a political forum on this site to express that opinion, just not in the technical forum. I would only say that without opposing opinion we are 1984 in 2011. I deleted my opinions from this thread, at your behest, which was correct, by the way. If people want to have it out, do it in the political forum, not here. I believe that my opinion is very different than many on this forum, but I can live with and welcome that. All that said, I think we should keep our comments about the price of diesel and not why, because there is probably not a consensus on that. I plan on hauling back over 100 gallons of fuel from Mexico, buying a storage tank for my home, leaving enough in my truck to get back to Mexico and then repeat , always repeat

Mark P.S. In case you didn't notice, I deleted all my posts not directly related to the empirical price of diesel, something not debatable...

Again, not trying to be a kill joy. Just trying to avert a war!

At some point the price will be high enough to make oil shale recovery profitable. I understand we have a 200 year supply of that under the Great Basin.
I'm also not sure they've switched to summer blend here in MD, my mpgs seem pretty good but i'm not certain.
the station manager told me today to expect reg gas to go to 4.50, if it does that diesel will be around 5
