IP too far advanced???

What is the downside of advancing the IP too far. I put it back on and I was wondering if advancing it too far would hurt anything? The motor seems to have a higher pitched rattle now. I did a few things to it while I had it off, ground the fuel pin, installed the 3200 spring, replaced the fuel filter, etc.

The truck runs entirely different now. I am amazed. It has power, higher top speed, I had to glue my boost line to the gauge because at 20 psi, it kept popping off. I only have a 3K tach and it will peg it in no time now.

I didn't mess with the smoke screw or the power screw because it looked like they had been messed with before.
Here are my concerns. The truck now has a light smoke haze at idle. The motor sounds alot different when it is at idle or at the instant that it starts. More clatter, and it seems to be at a higher pitch. The IP looks to be almost a half inch from the previous mark. Should I back it back down to 1/4"?

Thanks in advance. hehehe get it "advance"

Searching the threads on the subject will find the quote "shove it to the head until it sounds like a 6.2 gm then back off a little." It sounds to me that you may be at the 6.2 stage.

The smoke/haze at idle should be able to be cleaned up by adjusting the smoke screw and/or starwheel. (go up with them for less smoke/haze at 0psi)

Advanced timing should clear up idle haze.? But depending on how much you ground off the pin, it may be fueling a little heavy at idle. Like said above, Adjust your starwheel and smoke screw out a little, then back down your timing.

I saw the back off at rattle post. I more cleaned up the previous owners hack job on the pin, than an actual new profile. There was a plastic bottlecap under my AFC housing, keeping the pin at a set point when I took the IP apart. I removed it so it could travel like it is supposed to. I will back off of the adjustments, if I have to. But my question remains. What is wrong with having the extreme advance? I have seen posts by people here that have the IP basically laying against the head. Is there a downside, other than the rattle? Is there something bad that will happen if I leave it that way?

Insane amounts of fuel require lots of timing so it has time to burn. From what I understand it increases cylinder pressure and heat on top of the pistons somwhat falsifying the pryo temp reading. Not too much of a problem for a play truck but if you actually work it be careful.....

Ok, that makes sense. I have noticed my cruising egt is about 200* above where it used to be. I will back off a bit then. I tow about 10K with it from time to time. I really wanted an answer before I used it for towing.
Thanks!

No one can make a Cummins sound that bad.

If I advance mine too far, it pops when reved in neutral when warm. It always pops when reved when it's not totally warm.

you got all 3 bolts right? if so they don't break lose the first time very easy. i had to use a ratchet strap, seen in a picture on this site, searched bumping the timing or something like that

After this tank of fuel is done, I guess I will back off the timing some . I will see if that has any effect on my rattle/smoke/egt. If it doesn't, I will start backing off on the smoke and fuel screw. I was really happy happy with the power that I had, I hope I don't lose too much. Is there anything else I should check for? I had the IP off to fix a leak, but I really didn;t change anything, other than what I have posted here.

Is it possible that my "cleaning up" of the fuel pin has caused this? Should I put the bottlecap back in to see??
