Intercooler boot blew

On my way home today i was hitting about 35 PSI of boost when i heard a loud noise come from under my hood, and i instantly lost power. I was about 10 km from home so i just limped it there. When i got home i popped the hood to find one of my IC boot exploded. There was a little bit of oil in it as well.

Once i saw the oil i got scared and thought turbo bearing, but i cleaned everything up and fired the truck up with the IC boot off and there seems to be no oil blowing out the compressor discharge.

Now, why was there a little bit of oil in there? There is none at all downstream from the first boot..........Was it from running the truck without a boot for awhile? Or was it just from a instant 35 PSI to zero boost condition creating a little bit of oil to blowby? Or is the turbo bearing screwed?

Myabe i should just put on the new boot and test it for a few days.... then look for any oil in the discharge piping?

Thanks for help

Jeff

Turbo doesn't seem loose? There's no oil in the compressor outlet?

Turbo doesn't seem overly loose. There was oil in the compressor outlet, but i wiped it away and it don't blow oil anymore. I think it was just maybe leaked a bit when it blew due to sudden pressure differential?

I tested it at idle with no load on the turbo, and it didn't leak. Do turbo's only leak oil under load if the bearing is shot?

I dunno. I think your theory makes sense. It's not puking oil out at idle, so I think you ought to put it back together and drive it for a week or so, then pop the boot off and take a look. If it's oily again you'll need a rebuild.
