Blew off a Boot
Blew off a Boot
This morning I was diving along and kinda got into it a little bit and all of a sudden I heard a loud boom, so I pulled over and I looked and didn't see anything that was obvious, no oil no nothing. So I continued down the road, my truck felt like it had no power and was continously blowing smoke. Once I reached my destination which was 8 miles from where the boom had occurred, I looked more thoroughly and found that I had blown off my passinger side intercooler boot, which had oil dripping from it. My question is, does this happen very often? Did I cause any damage by driving it this way and is there suppose to be oil comming from there?
Thanks,
Chris

From what I've experienced... there should only be a loud woosh when a boot is blown... not a loud boom with showing of oil. If there's oil I'd give the turbo a good once over. Oil should go in from the top of the turbo and feed down through to only the oil return on the bottom.
Again, I could stand corrected.

I blew off the boot that exits the intercooler, and it did make a loud boom sound ( was at about 40 psi
). I did not have any oil leaking form it though, that sounds like another problem. There shouldn't be any oil in the intake path.

I have blown boots out from under the clamps 3 times now , every time it sounded like someone poked a 4" hole in the side of an air compressor, combined with the noise a hotdog makes when left in the microwave too long...
If the boot is not torn , put it back on ,a nd check all your clamps. Definetly give that turbo a once over , there should be no oil in there.

if you run a K&N or other filter that is rechargable with oil then then you may be seeing the oil from your filter & it could be the reason the boot came off to begin with, if so I'd pull it back off & clean the boot & the pipe with brake cleaner or contact cleaner, just something that is fast drying & will get the oily residue off & then reinstall & it should be ok, mine got a little oil seepage from my FIPK under one of the boots & it was a pain in the neck until I got all the film off & it's been good since, may wanna try that, if it's motor oil then you've probably got a seal going in the turbo, but i'd imagine you already knew that!!
