I was talking to an inspection guy yesterday. From what he understands it goes by the title. A cab n chassis is commercial while anything else (regular vehicles) aren't. You can insure your vehicle any way you'd like to, weather it be in your name or someone elses, just so long as the vin number is covered. Also i learned that its more weight oriented than anything. A heavier vehicle will cost more on insurance period. Something about the potential amount of damage you are able to cause.
I'm going off only a few sources so correct me if u know i'm wrong.

here is my update.my insurance broker got back to me today on rates.he said a commercial policy would cost $120.00 more per year for the flat bed on my 89 dodge.not bad. but! being as i have only one other auto on a non commercial policy that vehicle will go up $180.00 because i don't have a two car discount. so, it will cost me $300.00 more for insurance per year to put a flat bed on my truck.i guess i will stick to a pickup bed.just for your info i pay $779.00 per year for my wifes car(full coverage) and my 89 dodge( no flat bed, liability only).
shoot, i wish i hadn't read this thread, then I could just say i didn't know anything about having to change insurance. But I did, so now feel obligated to check into making sure i'm covered. I could always call and ask my provider "hypothetically speaking" what i have to do IF i put a flatbed on my truck and go from there.
cseby- you are from my area, so i will take your rates as a close estimate to what mine might be. Who is your provider, if you dont mind?

I think this commercial policy 'requirement' is just some Internet rumor - You can't expect the insurance company is going to spend a lot of (any) effort talking people out of more expensive policies.

I think JustRamIt is correct. I just had a little 'incident' with my truck (flatbed) and the insurance adjusters only comment about the flatbed was that he thought it was cool, and that it must have made my truck worth more because it can haul more.

im in the middle of doing a conversion and my insurance agent cam out to look at our new house and garage and he told me that im gonna have to send in picture of the conversion end my truck might end up being an r title and i got the flat bed for it already he never said any thing about the commercial licence. is that true tho that im going to have to re-title my truck for a 318 to a Cummins? that don't make much scene to me at all.

I don't know what the differences in rates are, but when I got my W350 insured, I had to fill out a whole sheet on what exactly it had on it since it's a cab&chassis. It has a standard pickup bed on it and the insurance is cheap. I'm kind of curious now what the rate would have been had it had a flatbed on it.
usually when you get insurance they require pictures or take pictures of your vehicle for insurance purposes. so when you say someone hit my truck!!! they know the dent wasn't already there.
One thing I know is in PA you can't insure a vehicle this old for anything but liablility. I checked several companies and they all said comp and crash insurance was not available. I ended up going with AIC or some such a company, can't remember what the actual name is, I would have to go get my insurance card. Associates, maybe.
I'm in PA and the owner has to have insurance in their name.
You cannot legally own a vehicle and have someone else carry insurance on it. You must show owners card and insurance card if you get stopped or for inspection and the names and address must match. You will get fined and rejected for inspection.
As for full coverage insurance you can get full coverage on any vehicle you want if you pay for it and your insurance company will cover it.
If you don't agree with 1 company try another.
Commecial insurance is for commercial vehicles not private. Doesn't matter if flat bed or not, only if used for business.
