Brake trouble
So I added roughly 3/16 of an inch to the top of the spring clip deal that slides in under the front calipers. I tried to bend them to get them to hold the calipers better, because there was slack, but then I realized that I had bent them so far that there was nothing to hold them in, so I added material. Which brings me to my question, what is going on? Are the slides on my caliper worn or the slides on the axle? What needs replaced here?
No, we have owned the truck since new. It is all the right parts. I think that 400,000 miles has worn the slides down, on either the calipers or the axle, or both. I just don't wanna buy new parts if i don't know for sure what the problem is.
I got an authorized reproduction on the bay for around 100 dollars...I'll post a link...Mark
Well the guy I bought mine from is not there, but, if your truck is a 90, there are 2 of them currently listed. These are just the diesel supplement. The one I got was 3 separate manuals, 2 for the truck and 1 for the engine...This one

at Genos is for the truck, but does not include the engine don't know what to say...First time in my life

I hadn't ever worked on Dodge brakes until this past year. I was surprised how those clips are supposed to hold the caliper on
It was clear the contact surfaces on the caliper bracket were worn. Inside pad had worn a bit of a groove. I cleaned them up some with a file and made a shim out of some scrap sheet metal. It took up the slack - no more clunking at least.

Shim was about 2" long and kind of Z shaped from the end.

I had the same problem with my brakes. The calipers were so worn that the spring clip kept falling out.
Then I discovered that they make the caliper shims in several different thicknesses to compensate for the wear. I installed the thickest set, and the brakes have been great since.
I ordered the shims from my local Carquest. Much cheaper than a set of calipers.
Good luck.
