Injector pump on a 1st gen CTD

I think my Inj pump has given up the ghost. Before I commit to towing it to a shop for diagnosis/repair, I want to rule out the simple stuff. I'm pretty sure I have pulled and checked the fuel shutoff solenoid and it seems ok. Does anyone have a picture of the solenoid? The line drawing of the engine I have now isn't real helpful in determining for sure if I have the right part out.

On the bottom of my pump there is a spring loaded cross shaped piece. It rotates parallel to the engine, about 45 degrees or so. It doesn't have any wires, cables or soleniods connected to it. Though it does have a hole that looks like something could actuate it. I'm curious what it is. Ideas?

Now I want to check out the inj pump as much as I can, without specialized diesel tools. I'm getting my hands on a Chilton's manual in the next few days. The Haynes manual I have doesn't even mention the diesel engines. I have a small leak at the throttle linkage connector on the pump. Is this a repairable condition? Or am I looking at a pump rebuild to fix this?

I'm hoping to be able to fix this relatively cheaply. The truck is a 91 with only 83k miles on it, and it is killing me to have something this serious go out on it. It was all of a sudden, no warning at all, and I always thought IPs gave more notice before they failed.

So, let me know if y'all have any ideas. In the meantime I have a great truck sitting idly in the driveway taking up space.

Thanks

From your other posts, I can assure you that you have correctly identified the shutoff solenoid. The cross shaped piece is the manual shutoff lever that can be used to shut down the engine from under the hood in case the shutoff solenoid fails in the open position. I haven't been into my own IP so I don't feel qualified to talk about what may be wrong inside and what can be done to fix it.

OK, cool. At least I have narrowed it down to one less possibility.

Next question. It appears that the VE IP was spec'ed on everything from a VW Rabbit to these trucks. Are the pumps really that interchangeable? I'm guessing I can find a pump from a VW much easier than from the truck, and if I can make that swap, it will make life much easier.

Thanks

Unfortunately it's not that simple, the VW pump is a 4 cylinder unit. The shutoff solenoid interchanges off VW/Audi's though. Be very careful swapping pumps around, there are different rotation directions and governor types, as well as different fuel and timing curves and different governed RPM's. Check U.S. Diesel Parts and Diesel Injection Service for ballpark prices on rebult units.

The VE on a VW is governed at something like 5000/5500 rpm and the one on our trucks about 2500rpm.
